Who Takes the Next Step as a Heavyweight Contender?

Ciryl Gane has been someone many have pegged to be a UFC champion after his first pro fight when he won the TKO (a Canadian regional promotion) heavyweight belt in his first fight. He entered the UFC at 3-0 and has rallied off five straight wins in the UFC including beating some well-known names. Alexander Volkov, meanwhile, has been a perennial contender and had Derrick Lewis gotten the last-second hail mary KO he would’ve fought for UFC gold by now, but now he has worked himself back up.

Gane & Volkov Recent Fights

Gane
VS
Volkov
Jairzinho Rozenstruik, win by decision Fight 1 Alistair Overeem, win by TKO
Junior dos Santos, win by TKO Fight 2 Walt Harris, win by TKO
Tanner Boser, win by decision Fight 3 Curtis Blaydes, loss by decision
Don’Tale Mayes, win by submission Fight 4 Greg Hardy, win by decision

This is a very fascinating matchup as Gane has been a rising star in the UFC but gets his toughest test in Volkov who is a phenomenal striker. That being said, there is a path to victory to beating him and that is wrestling him. Yet, he uses his range very well to keep his opponents at bay, which Gane will have to figure out.

Although the stakes for the winner aren’t certain, due to Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic still out there, if the winner of Gane-Volkov has an impressive performance they could face the winner of Ngannou-Lewis 2 sometime next year.

Gane & Volkov Stats

Gane
VS
Volkov
31 Age 32
6’4″ Height 6’7″
83″ Reach 81″
3 UFC finishes 4

If Volkov can keep the distance he should be able to have success as Gane is more of a counter striker, and we saw him have a lackluster fight against Rozenstruik. There is a chance both men try to counter each other, and it isn’t the most entertaining fight.

Ultimately, I do think Gane will be able to use his wrestling to clinch up Volkov and get timely takedowns. On the feet, he should be able to land the more powerful shots. This should be a very close fight, and although I like Gane to win a decision, at this point, I think the odds have gotten too high.

Pick: Ciryl Gane (-167)

Will Boser Remain a UFC Fighter After Saturday?

Ovince St. Preux is a perennial light heavyweight contender but on Saturday he’ll move up to heavyweight to face short-notice replacement, Tanner Boser who took this fight on a week’s notice.

St. Preux & Boser Recent Fights

St. Preux
VS
Boser
Jamahal Hill, loss by TKO Fight 1 Ilir Latifi, loss by split decision
Alonzo Menifield, win by KO Fight 2 Andrei Arlovski, loss by decision
Ben Rothwell, loss by split decision Fight 3 Raphael Pessoa, win by TKO
Michal Oleksiejczuk, win by submission Fight 4 Philipe Lins, win by KO

It should be noted that Boser didn’t even get a chance to train for this fight as after his split decision loss to Ilir Latifi, he went back home to Canada and had a two-week quarantine. When the quarantine was over, he had to fly back to Vegas for fight week, so it will be interesting to see how he does.

Ultimately, I don’t like St. Preux at heavyweight as I expect Boser to be able to outstrike the contender and win a clear-cut decision in a must-win spot for the Canadian.

Pick: Tanner Boser (-150)

Other UFC Vegas 30 Picks:

  1. Kennedy Nzechukwu (-110): I like Nzechukwu to be able to keep it standing and piece up Marques to win a decision.
  2. Andre Fili (-215): Fili should be able to keep this standing similar to what Swanson did and get a TKO win.
  3. Tim Means (-170): I like Means to be able to just outstrike Dalby who doesn’t throw enough volume for my liking
  4. Renato Moicano (-230): Moicano will likely mix in his grappling and striking to control Herbert and win a decision.
