The second half of tonight’s NBA Play-In Tournament doubleheader pits the Blazers vs the Suns in the West’s 7th vs 8th place game. No 7th place team has ever failed to qualify for the playoffs since the introduction of the Play-In Tournament five years ago, and online sportsbooks expect Phoenix to punch their ticket tonight, pegging them as 3.5-point favorites in the NBA odds.

Game of 1 tonight’s doubleheader is going to be full of offensive fireworks. This contest however, screams rock fight. Both Phoenix and Portland ranked below league average in offensive rating this season, and each were bottom-10 in true shooting percentage. The Suns are the lowest scoring team to qualify for either the playoffs or the Play-In Tournament, while only the Clippers and Warriors averaged fewer points per game than the Blazers.

NBA True Shooting Percentage Ranks

Portland’s offensive issues stem from a lack of quality shooters. They rank 28th in both 2-point and 3-point field goal percentage. They get to the line a ton, but miss far too often ranking 22nd in free throw percentage. No team averages fewer assists per game than the Blazers (17.5), while they lack consistent inside scoring ranking 21st in points in the paint.

Speaking of interior offense, only the Bucks average fewer points in the paint than Phoenix, while the Suns rank 30th in free throw attempts. The one thing Phoenix does excel at is 3-point shooting, but they could be missing one of their best long range shooters in Grayson Allen due to a hamstring injury.

As for the respective defenses, that’s the strength of both these squads. Phoenix and Portland each rank top-12 or better in defensive rating, with Phoenix boasting the lowest scoring defense in the Play-In Tournament. Expect points to be at a premium tonight, making under 217.5 points an easy wager to place.

Moving over to the NBA props market where I’m betting on Toumani Camara to eclipse 17.5 points+rebounds. It’s a feat he’s done in six of his past seven outings, and in each of the past two matchups versus the Suns.

The former Phoenix draft pick has averaged over 36 minutes of action in his past five games, and has been a dominant rebounder versus the Suns this year pulling down 11 boards in two of the three contests. Phoenix’s poor offensive efficiency naturally leads to more rebounding opportunities for opposing players, while Camara has quietly taken 12+ shots in seven straight games. Has he been efficient? No, but the opportunity is what we’re banking on and given his rebounding ceiling in this matchup, we won’t need too many points to cash this ticket.
