If the season ended today, the Nets would earn the final spot in the East in the NBA playoff bracket and would face the Chicago Bulls in the 9-vs-10 Play-In Tournament matchup. The Blazers are nine games back of 10th in the West.

Portland Stuck in Another Rut

Second-last in the West with a conference-worst -9.8 point differential, the Blazers have dropped four in a row and seven of eight heading into Wednesday night. They are, however, 3-3 in their last six home games, and their only win this month came against these same Nets in Brooklyn on Jan. 7 (134-127 OT).

Anfernee Simons was all-world in the win over the Nets, scoring a team-high 38 points on 52% shooting from the field while dishing out a game-high 11 assists.

Injuries continue to plague the Blazers. Shaedon Sharpe (15.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG) remains out with a thing injury, while Malcolm Brogdon (14.7 PPG, 5.1 APG) is listed as questionable with a groin injury, and Deandre Ayton (13.1 PPG, 10.8 RPG) has been upgraded to probable.

The Blazers are also a surprisingly strong 5-6 against the Eastern Conference this year. but their recent skid has dropped them to third-last in the NBA in Net Rating (-9.9), ahead of only Detroit and Charlotte.

Brooklyn Also Mired in Ugly Skid

Brooklyn comes into Wednesday’s game on a three-game losing streak and losers of eight of the past nine. Like Portland, they have just one win in the month of January, though it was an impressive 124-115 win over the OKC Thunder, who sit second in the West standings.

Last time out, they dropped a shockingly low-scoring 96-95 decision to Miami in OT. Neither team managed to hit 90 points in regulation time and the Nets squandered all of a 14-point halftime lead.

The abysmal offensive performance was somewhat unusual for the Nets. Brooklyn is mid-pack in Offensive Rating (114.7, 17th) but in the bottom-third in Defensive Rating (116.4, 21st). The -1.7 Net Rating is a disconcerting 22nd in the league.

Mikal Bridges (21.4 PPG) and Cam Thomas (20.5 PPG) continue to shoulder the bulk of the offensive load, though Bridges in particular isn’t living up to expectations this season. After posting a career-high 21.3 Player Efficiency Rating last year while averaging a career-high 26.1 PPG, his PER has dropped precipitously to 16.1.

With lingering questions about who will be in the lineup, especially on the Portland side, only three players are currently listed in the NBA player props for Brooklyn vs Portland. Simons and Bridges both have point total over/unders of 24.5, while Nicolas Claxton has a massive 12.5 O/U rebound number.

Brooklyn Nets vs Portland Trail Blazers Prediction

The Nets have better underlying numbers than the Blazers, but are trending in the wrong direction.  Five of their eight recent losses have come by at least nine points, and they have only covered one spread in their past nine games after being one of the best ATS teams through the first two months of the season.

There isn’t much to love on the Portland side, but +200 is the right price to take a shot on the Blazers at home against a struggling opponent, especially with Ayton likely to return to the lineup tonight and ameliorate Portland’s horrendous rebounding issues (48.5 rebound %, 25th in the NBA).

It’s also worth noting that the NBA public betting splits are hammering the Nets (65% of ATS handle and 72% of moneyline handle) and the public is 12 games under .500 on ATS picks this season.
