A four-game slide has the Chicago Bulls fading in an ultra-competitive East chase for the top seed.

On Monday, they visit one of the teams that recently leapfrogged them, the Philadelphia 76ers. Philly lost last game out, but they were without James Harden, who sat out to rest his hamstring. They’re a perfect 4-0 with the Beard in the lineup.

His return is one of the reasons the Sixers are comfy 6.5-point favorites in this one.

Bulls vs 76ers Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Chicago Bulls +6.5 (-110) +220 Ov 229.5 (-110)
Philadelphia 76ers -6.5 (-110) -278 Un 229.5 (-110)

At 39-25 and fourth in the conference, a Bulls win would push them back over the Sixers, who currently sit in second at 39-24. There’s plenty of jockeying still to go, as teams 1-through-6 are within six games of each other.

This matchup gets underway from Wells Fargo Center at 7pm ET, and can be seen live on NBA League Pass. The 76ers and Bulls are both jockeying for a top two seed in the NBA Playoff Bracket.

Chicago Bulls Betting Outlook

The Bulls are in a meaty part of their schedule, part of 10 of their next 12 on the road, and so far, it hasn’t been pretty.

Their four-game skid has come against three of the teams currently ranked in the top-10 in the 2022 NBA Championship odds. Their most recent loss came Friday in Milwaukee, a 118-112 L against the Bucks.

This despite a strong showing from Chicago’s dynamic all-star duo. Zach LaVine led the way with 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while DeMar DeRozan added 29 points and five assists. DeRozan didn’t shoot it well, however, finishing just 11-for-30 from the field.

Nikola Vucevic added 19 points and nine boards, and no other Bull finished in double-digit scoring. Chicago has been in all of their losses during this slide, with the margin of defeat at six or less points. Only a 112-99 loss to the East-leading Heat was by double figures.

Injuries are starting to wear down this roster, particularly the losses of Lonzo Ball (knee) and Alex Caruso (wrist), who won’t be evaluated until at least the middle of the month. Patrick Williams (wrist) is also out until at least March 16.

Having guys like Ayo Dosunmu, Javonte Green Coby White and Tristan Thompson having to punch up a level is showing, and can’t always be covered up by DeRozan and LaVine’s scoring outbursts.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Outlook

For one game, Joel Embiid had flashbacks to life without a superstar teammate. With Harden sitting their game against the Heat, Philly was bottled up in a 99-82 loss. He saw plenty of extra bodies all night.

Embiid, the current betting favorite in the 2022 NBA MVP odds, was limited to 22 points and 15 rebounds on 4-for-15 shooting from the field. He also attempted six three-pointers, missing all six.

To put the Sixers’ offensive woes into perspective, in the previous four games with Harden in the lineup, all wins, the 76ers’ lowest scoring output in a game was 123 points.

It wasn’t just Embiid: Tyrese Maxey, who’s become the unofficial third wheel ahead of veteran Tobias Harris, who’s still trying to find his footing in this new era, struggled against Miami. He finished with 17 points, a game after tying his season-high of 33 points in a win over the Cavaliers.

As a team, Philadelphia couldn’t get it going from downtown, shooting an abysmal 7-for-41, a miniscule 17.1%. They also shot 28-of-82 from the field, just 34.1%.

Bulls vs 76ers Pick

Philadelphia is looking for a 4-game season series sweep Monday, with all three wins coming pre-Beard. Not surprisingly, Embiid has led the Bulls in scoring in all three, the latest, a 40-point, 10-rebound gem in a 119-108 win on Feb 6.

At 18-13, though, the 76ers have the lowest home win total of the top-six teams, and they own just a 12-19 mark ATS at Wells Fargo, the fifth-worst mark in the league.

The Bulls have the fifth-best mark in the NBA for success against the spread, going 36-27-1 on the season. They’re a respectable 15-15 on the road straight up, though they’ve dropped four of their last six away from United Center.

With Harden in the lineup, only one Philly win has come by single digits, winning by an average of 17 points.

Despite that, I see the DeRozan and LaVine keeping things close, albeit in a loss.

Pick: Bulls +6.5 (-110)
