  • The decimated Philadelphia 76ers host the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night
  • Already without Joel Embiid, Philly could be missing Tobias Harris (illness) as well

With five of their top-11 scorers either out or questionable, the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers (30-18, 17-7 home, 29-19 ATS) will play host to the Dallas Mavericks (26-23, 12-10 away, 24-25 ATS) on Monday evening at the Wells Fargo Center (7:10 pm ET).

The comparatively-healthy (though not completely healthy) Mavericks are listed as slight road favorites over Philadelphia as the Sixers try to tread water during a brutal spell of injuries.

In addition to Joel Embiid (knee), the Sixers are also without the services of Nicolas Batum (hamstring), De’Anthony Melton (back), and Robert Covington (knee) in Monday’s NBA lineups, while Tobias Harris (illness) is listed as questionable and didn’t play in Saturday’s loss to Brooklyn.

The Mavericks are missing Dante Exum (knee). Luka Doncic (ankle) and Maxi Kleber (toe) are both “questionable” and Kyrie Irving (thumb) is probable to return from a six-game absence. The Mavericks are 11-11 without Irving this season and 15-12 with the eight-time All-Star in the lineup.

76ers Lose Five of Six Entering Monday

With just one win in their past six games, the Sixers find themselves sliding down the Eastern Conference standings. Ten days ago, the Sixers were third in the East, trailing only Boston and Milwaukee. If the postseason started today, Philadelphia would have the East #5 seed in the NBA playoff bracket and would have to face the surging Knicks in the first round without the benefit of home-court advantage.

Last time out, the 76ers were embarrassed 136-121 at home by a thoroughly mediocre Brooklyn Nets team.  Their recent skid also includes setbacks to the Pacers (134-122 away), Nuggets (111-105 away), Trail Blazers (130-104), and Warriors (119-107).

Philly’s only win since Jan. 22 was a razor-thing 127-124 victory at Utah which required a superhuman 51-point performance from Tyrese Maxey.

At full strength, the 76ers had been one of the most-dominant teams in the league this season, sitting in the top-five in both O-Rating and D-Rating until injuries took their toll. Their defense has taken the biggest hit of late, dropping to ninth in D-Rating at 113.3.

Philly’s +6.0 Net Rating is still good enough for fourth in the league, but it’s fallen over three points in the last month.

Dallas Brings Two-Game Skid into Philadelphia

The Mavericks have also been on a slump recently, largely due to their own injury woes. Dallas is just 2-6 in its past eight and has dropped to eighth in the West as a result. Without both Doncic and Irving, the team was routed 121-87 at Minnesota on Wednesday. Doncic returned to the lineup against Milwaukee on Saturday but the Bucks still ran away with a 129-117 road win, overcoming 40 from Dallas’ Slovenian star.

Doncic was battling the same ankle soreness against the Bucks that has him listed as “questionable” tonight. He played a game-high 42 minutes and finished one rebound short of a triple-double (40 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds).

Dallas has managed to stay above .500 despite a negative point differential (-0.6) and Net Rating (-0.7). Their defense sits an abysmal 25th in D-Rating (117.4).

Player props from the DraftKings Sportsbook app

With all the injuries on both sides, Monday’s NBA player props only list four players (two from each team) for Mavericks vs 76ers. Doncic is listed with a massive point total of 36.5, more than two above his season average (34.8 PPG). Maxey, who’s averaged 26.2 PPG this season, is also listed with a point total well above that (29.5).

If any of the players listed do not start the game, any wagers on their performance totals will be voided.

Mavericks vs 76ers Prediction

Philadelphia has looked like a completely different team over the last month – which largely coincides with Embiid’s absence – especially on defense. The Sixers have surrendered at least 120 points nine times since Jan. 5 (a stretch of 15 games). That only happened nine times in the first 33 games of the season.

Doncic’s ankle injury gives me very little pause in terms of backing Dallas/fading Philadel[hia. As mentioned, he played 42 minutes last time out and was as effective as ever against a good Milwaukee defense.

DAL vs PHI pick: Mavericks moneyline (-122)
