We’ve reached the Consolation portion of the NBA Summer League bracket, with the Kings and Hornets squaring off tonight. Both teams are winless in their last three outings, after each starting their Vegas run with a victory, and online sportsbooks expect Sacramento’s struggles to continue. Charlotte has been pegged as 1.5-point favorites in this matchup, and I think there’s an argument to be made that the line isn’t nearly high enough.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm ET, 3:30 pm PT, at the Pavilion in Las Vegas, NV, with Amazon Prime Video and NBA TV Canada providing the broadcast coverage.

My favorite pick tonight is Charlotte -1.5. Commercial sportsbooks are offering the line at -115 odds, but you can trade it over at prediction market Kalshi for 52-cents, which is the equivalent of -108 odds. There are a few reasons to like the Hornets tonight, starting with the absence of Kings first round pick Darius Acuff Jr. The 7th overall pick and NBA Rookie of the Year odds contender has been shut down for the summer, after averaging 19 points in his three Vegas outings. Despite struggling with turnovers, Acuff flashed an incredibly high offensive ceiling, and was by far the best distributor on the roster. Without him, Sacramento will lean heavily on second round picks Emanuel Sharp, but he’s been inconsistent from the floor posting three games with a field goal percentage of 40% or below.

Defensively, the Kings have also struggled, yielding well over 90 points per game. They’ve done a porous job in the half court especially, failing to close out quick enough, while allowing too many easy looks. Their defensive inefficiencies, and the lack of reliable secondary scoring, has led Sacramento to posting a -12.8 average point differential through four games, the worst mark in the Desert.

That’s good news for Charlotte, who despite also being 1-3, have been much more competitive than the Kings. They’ve been 7 points better on average per contest than Sacramento, and own a massive advantage along the wing and in the interior. Last year’s first round pick Liam McNeely has been their most efficient scorer, averaging 22 points per game.

Alongside McNeely, Tidjane Salaun and Ryan Kalkbrenner have done an excellent job controlling the interior, giving the Hornets plenty of post scoring and rebounding. They should feast on a weak Kings frontcourt tonight, gobbling up offensive rebounds and generating lots of second chance opportunities.

Charlotte has scored 90+ points in every contest but one so far in Vegas, and they’ll have plenty of opportunities to exceed that number tonight against this underwhelming Kings team. Without Acuff Jr., there’s not enough talent for Sacramento to punch back, making the Hornets a slam dunk against the spread.

As mentioned, the best place to bet Charlotte against the spread is over at Kalshi, who are offering the superior price. Total-wise, both the prediction market and commercial sportsbooks like Bet365 have the over/under pegged at 183.5, but Bet365 is offering the lower price on the over (-110 vs -117) if you believe we’re in store for a high-scoring game.
