With a new coach at the forefront in Stan Van Gundy, the New Orleans Pelicans are already looking to build around Zion Williamson with a younger core of players.

Although it’s just at its primary stages, veteran guard Jrue Holiday could be dealt elsewhere in the coming weeks. The 30-year old has been in a Pels uniform since 2013 and was almost traded away last season to the Brooklyn Nets before the deadline.

According to the online sportsbooks, NOLA still has the best odds to keep their star PG, while the Nets, Pacers, and Warriors are all in the running to land him.

Unique Skill Set Will Spark Interest of Contenders

There’s still a very high chance that New Orleans decides to keep Holiday for another season. But if he is dealt, there would be many teams vying for his unique skill set on both sides of the ball.

Last season, Holiday averaged 19.1 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.8 boards per contest. He’s the type of player who is dangerous on and off the ball which fits perfectly into today’s game.

Holiday can hold his own on both ends of the court as well. He’s made two All-NBA Defensive teams in his 11-year career. We also can’t forget just how important his presence is in the locker room, especially with such a young team in NOLA. Holiday is the ultimate leader there and has served as a mentor to many players.

Is Brooklyn Possible?

Brooklyn would be one of the first teams that come to mind. They’re getting back Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving from injury and although Caris LeVert and Spencer Dinwiddie have shown glimpses of brilliance at times, the Nets have made it clear they would like to add a third star.

Holiday would give Steve Nash another top-notch offensive player who can also make up for Irving’s lackluster defense. However, the Pelicans will be seeking players in return who can help their young core. LeVert and Dinwiddie would be the main two, plus a draft pick potentially.

LeVert is coming off a career-best season and at just 26 years old, he’s hitting his prime. Dinwiddie would also add some depth at point guard alongside Lonzo Ball.

Could Golden State Be Holiday’s Next Destination?

It’s clear knowledge that the Warriors want to trade away their number two overall pick in this month’s draft. With Steph Curry and Klay Thompson returning from injury-ridden seasons last year, they won’t be trying to rebuild. Golden State will be looking to go after another title.

Add in Holiday to their solid core and Steve Kerr’s team could be a force to be reckoned with. Going the other way to NOLA would probably be Andrew Wiggins – another younger player who could be a solid add as he’s a productive scorer and can be covered for defensively. Also, they could even snatch up the second overall pick in the draft.

For the Pelicans, this seems like a good trade. As for the Warriors, they still lack size, but Holiday would instantly make them better on both ends of the hardwood.

Best Bet

Atlanta has a lot of cap space and could potentially be a team where Holiday could go as well. There are so many different options as to where the Pels guard could be traded in the next month because many organizations could offer NOLA young talent and/or draft picks in return.

But in my opinion, I think GM David Griffin will keep Holiday around for another season.

He’s too valuable to this team in many different ways and with him and Zion Williamson showing out, a berth in the postseason is well within reach next season. After the upcoming campaign though I could see them finally trading him, especially if they don’t make the playoffs.
