The new #1 seed in the Western Conference, the OKC Thunder (35-15, 15-9 away, 31-18-1 ATS) will try to keep hold of that mantle on Tuesday night when they head to Salt Lake City for a date with the Utah Jazz (25-26, 16-7 home, 29-21-1 ATS) at the Delta Center.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:10 pm MT and the odds, while tight, favor the visitors.

The Thunder’s grip on top spot in the West could not be more tenuous. OKC and Minnesota have identical 35-15 records, but OKC wins the tiebreaker by virtue of a better division record.

The Jazz, meanwhile, are clinging to the #10 (and final) seed in the West portion of the NBA playoff bracket. If the season ended today, Utah would face the Lakers in the 9-vs-10 play-in game. Both Golden State and Houston are one game back of Utah.

OKC Survives Against Toronto for Third Straight Win

The Thunder got a much stiffer test than expected from the Raptors last time out as 8.5-point home favorites. The Thunder needed double-overtime to see off Toronto’s challenge (135-127), overcoming a 16-point halftime deficit in the process.

Four Thunder players scored between 22 and 24 points while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued his MVP push with 23 points, 14 assists, and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his first triple-double of the season.

SGA currently sits second in the NBA MVP odds at +288, trailing only two-time winner Nikola Jokic (-130).

The Thunder have been one of the most-balanced teams in the league this season. Alongside the Boston Celtics, they are the only other team that sits in the top five in both Offensive Rating (119.3, fifth) and Defensive Rating (111.2, fourth).

Jazz Mount Huge Comeback Win Over Bucks

Mired in a three-game losing skid as of Sunday, the Jazz looked poise to make it four in a row when they fell behind Milwaukee by ten at halftime and 12 after three quarters. But one of the most dominant fourth quarters in history (40-13) propelled the Jazz to a 123-108 home win over the fatigued Bucks.

Somehow Utah put up 123 points with only one player (Lauri Markkanen) scoring 20 points, and Markkanen barely cracked that plateau with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Six other players scored at least 12 for Utah, which absolutely demolished Milwaukee on the glass (52-32).

While Utah has an excellent record at home this season (16-7), the advanced stats do not put the Jazz among the upper echelon of the NBA. Utah is below average in Offensive Rating (115.6, 16th) and even worse in D-Rating (117.9, 25th).

The team’s -2.3 Net Rating positions them just 23rd in the NBA. Their -2.0 point differential is 1.1 worse than any other team in the West’s top ten, and is also worse than the two teams chasing them: Houston (+1.1) and Golden State (+0.3).

SGA has a massive point total of 32.5 O/U in Tuesday’s NBA player props, which is both 1.4 points higher than his season average (31.1 PPG) and nine points higher than any other player on the board. (Second is Utah’s Markkanen at 23.5.)

Thunder vs Jazz Prediction

There is no doubt about which roster has more talent and better balance. But this is a tough spot for the Thunder. They just expended a ton of energy 48 hours ago when the Raptors took them to double-OT. Four of five starters played at least 41 minutes by the end of the night, including 48 for SGA.

Part of Utah’s big home-court advantage comes from playing at altitude in Salt Lake City. Over the course of 48 minutes, Utah has a good chance of outlasting the more fatigued Thunder, just like they did against the Bucks on Sunday.
