Zero for four on their current five-game road trip, the slumping and injury-riddled Philadelphia 76ers (29-17, 12-11 away, 28-18 ATS) have one more chance to pick up a win on Thursday night against the Utah Jazz (24-25, 15-6 home, 29-20 ATS) before they head home.

The healthier Jazz are listed as 4.5-point home favorites. Tip-off is set for 8:10 pm MT/10:10 pm ET at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

Thursday’s NBA public betting splits show the Jazz getting 77% of ATS handle and 62% of moneyline handle as of noon ET. The public went just 96-114-11 ATS in the month of January and is 28 games under .500 for the season (328-356-28).

Sixers Struggling Without Embiid

After missing the first three games of the road trip – losses at Indiana (134-122), Denver (111-105), and Portland (130-104) – Joel Embiid attempted to return against Golden State on Monday. But he managed just 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting in 30 ineffective minutes before appearing to aggravate his existing knee injury late in the fourth quarter.

The favorite in the NBA MVP odds heading into the week, Embiid is off the board at most sportsbooks as it looks more and more certain that he won’t reach the 65-game minimum threshold to qualify.

Adding to the Sixers troubles, second-leading scorer Tyrese Maxey(25.7 PPG, 6.6 APG)  has missed the last two games. Maxey was the runaway favorite in the NBA Most Improved Player odds before his recent absence.

Philly has faded all the way to fifth in the East in the NBA playoff bracket and would face the #4 Cleveland Cavaliers if the season ended today.

Jazz Enter Thursday Amid 2-5 Skid

The Jazz were the talk of the NBA when they put together a six-game win streak that included impressive victories over the Bucks, Nuggets, and Pacers two weeks ago. But the team is just 2-5 since and has fallen below .500 at 24-25, which is just half a game ahead of Houston for 10th in the Western Conference.

The Jazz were relatively uncompetitive while losing each of their past two (147-114 at Brooklyn and 118-103 at New York).

Utah’s recent struggles correlate with the struggles of leading scorer Lauri Markkanen (23.5 PPG, 8.7 PG). The seven-foot Finn has failed to exceed 22 points in each of Utah’s last four losses (and averaged just 15 PPG) while scoring at least 29 in each of the team’s last four wins.

The good news for Utah fans is that six of their past seven games have come on the road and they remain an excellent 15-6 at home this year. They lost their last home game – a narrow 132-129 setback to the OKC Thunder – but had strung together nine wins in a row at the Delta Center prior.

Player props from the DraftKings Sportsbook app

With all the questions surrounding Philadelphia’s lineup tonight, only two Sixers (Oubre and Harris) are listed in the NBA player props. Expected to shoulder much of the scoring load with Embiid out and Maxey either out or slowed, Harris is listed with an over/under of 23.5, despite averaging just 17.7 PPG this season.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Utah Jazz Prediction

The way the Sixers have played during this road trip, and the fact that the shorthanded team will be playing at altitude at the tailend of the Western Conference swing, it’s surprising that the Jazz (who are 15-6 at home, including recent wins over the Nuggets, Lakers, and Pacers) aren’t favored by more.

The Sixers have showed little mettle sans Embiid this season, and this is an extremely tough context in which to flip that script.

PHI vs UTA Picks: Jazz moneyline (-190) – two units

Sascha Paruk’s 2023-24 NBA betting record:

  • 10-10-2 ATS (-0.59 units)
