The Wright State Raiders (15-12, 12-6 Horizon) — who took the home half of this matchup 75-64 less than two weeks ago — take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (18-8, 11-4 Horizon) in college basketball on Friday at the Athletics Center O’Rena. Tip off is at 9:00 pm ET on ESPN2.

Oakland is a four-point favorite over Wright State, while the total is 149. The -182 moneyline price for the Golden Grizzlies amounts to a 64.5% implied win probability, while Wright State’s +150 odds to win is equal to 40% implied probability.

Currently ranked 38 spots higher in the NET Rankings than any other Horizon League team, Oakland is expected to earn the conference’s auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament and is currently projected as a #15 seed in the March Madness bracket.

Scott Nagy’s team scored a season-high 49 points in the second half against the Norse last time out, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a season sweep at the hands of NKU. Junior forward Grant Basile had a team-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds in the four-point loss.

Meantime, Greg Kampe’s crew forced 14 turnovers by the Titans in a 16-point win. Leading scorer Jamal Cain’s 32 points were his second-highest in an Oakland uniform as the grad senior also led with 11 boards for his 14th double double this season and his second-straight 20-plus point game.

Wright State Has Dominated Oakland in H2H History

The Raiders have knocked off the Golden Grizzlies in ten of the last 12 meetings, including a run of eight in a row between the 2016-17 and 2020-21 seasons. That includes Wright State’s 11-point victory over Oakland on Feb. 5.

 Nagy’s group closed out that game on a 22-7 run, holding the Grizz scoreless from the floor (0-for-10 FG) and forcing seven turnovers over the final 9:25. The Raiders were 7-of-11 over that same stretch and connected on seven of their nine free throw attempts on the way to the victory. Trey Calvin had a game-high 23 points in the win. He added three assists, two steals and two rebounds to his final stat line. Wright State followed the victory with a 79-62 win over Green Bay, then suffered back-to-back losses by a combined seven points.

Junior guard Tanner Holden leads the outfit in scoring at 19.9 points per game.  He’s joined by Basile and Calvin as the team’s only other double-digit scorers. This group is solid offensively, rating 63rd in offensive 2-point field goal percentage, 32nd in offensive free throw percentage and 34th in offensive block percentage.

Oakland is 1-7 ATS in Last Eight

Despite going .500 (4-4) over the last eight games, the Golden Grizzlies have gone 1-7 against the spread in that timeframe. The lone cover was the program’s victory over its crosstown conference rival over the weekend.

With Cain being the linchpin in Kampe’s offense, Oakland can very easily get back on track. The 6-foot-7 former Marquette player was named Horizon Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The graduate transfer has scored 61 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the past two games.

Oakland’s Jamal Cain was Horizon League player of the week for the fourth time. Had 32 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Detroit Mercy. When he can stay on the floor — foul trouble has been an issue — Oakland is one tough out. That will be critical as we shift to March.

His 20.5 points per game is second in The Horizon, while his 10.1 boards per contest leads the league.

The Golden Grizzlies were picked to finish sixth in the conference preseason poll, but are the top-rated team in the league this season. Along with Pontiac native Cain’s marvelous homecoming campaign, Kampe has three other players averaging in double-figures.

Wright State vs Oakland Prediction

Along with this being a revenge game for the Golden Grizzlies, Oakland is 8-0 at the O’rena.

We mentioned the home team has far exceeded expectations during the 2021-22 season. Wright State is about where prognosticators expected it would be. The Raiders were picked second in the league’s preseason poll and are rated third in the league.

Oakland’s recent ATS record scares me. But Kampe’s team is simply better.
