It’s a clash of two SEC heavyweights when Alabama and Ole Miss faceoff in Week 5 of the 2021 College Football season on Saturday, October 2nd. The Crimson Tide have opened as 16.5-point favorites.

Matt Corral and the Rebels gave Alabama everything they could handle in an offensive shootout last season. Both teams are undefeated heading into the rematch at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Lane Trane Is Rolling

Could Lane Kiffin become the first former assistant of Nick Saban’s to beat the Alabama coach? Lane Kiffin’s Rebels are 3-0 on the season entering the Week 5 showdown in Tuscaloosa. Ole Miss leads the nation in total offense with 635 yards per game. Former assistants are 0-23 against the master Saban.

Ole Miss steamrolled Louisville, Austin Peay and Tulane to open the season before getting a bye in Week 4 to prepare for Alabama. The Rebels have covered the spread in every game, including dominating Tulane 61-24 last time out as 14-point favorites. They’ve covered in each of their last two meetings with the Tide.

The Rebels are led by Heisman favorite Matt Corral, who has thrown for 997 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception through three games. He’s complimented by an elite supporting class, including senior WR Dontario Drummond and junior RB Jerrion Ealy. Ole Miss also has an improved defense, allowing 20.6 points per game.

Tide Are Also Surging

The Crimson Tide are also undefeated (4-0) heading into their biggest test of the season in Week 5. Alabama won its 100th straight game over an unranked opponent in Week 4, decimating Southern Miss by a 63-14 margin. The Crimson Tide entered the game as 45-point favorites and covered the spread.

Alabama showed signs of weakness in a close Week 3 victory over Florida, but they got back on track against an inferior Eagles team Saturday. QB Bryce Young looked great as he threw five touchdowns passes, while Ohio State transfer running back Jameson Williams stole the show with 258 all-purpose yards.

Alabama tailback Brian Robinson Jr. sat out the game with bruised ribs, but could return for the crucial showdown with Ole Miss. Robinson has been the premiere back for the Tide this season, racking up 208 yards on 37 carries. Williams and Jase Mclennan proved in Week 4, however, that they’re capable of carrying the load in Robinson’s absence.

Expected Line Movement

Ole Miss came close to beating Alabama in 2020, and now they have an even better roster. Last year’s showdown in Oxford saw the Rebels racked up 647 yards in a 63-48 loss. Had Kiffin’s team had some resemblance of a defense they probably would’ve won that game. Their odds of winning are much better this time around.

Ole Miss has been the more impressive team this season, but Alabama is Alabama. The Crimson Tide have only lost one home game in the past five years and are 16-12 ATS in those contests. This line still appears a bit high given Kiffin’s electric offense and last year’s close result. Expect it to swing a point or two in Ole Miss’ direction leading up to kickoff.
