Crimson Tide Listed as Rare Underdog

Alabama is listed as the betting underdog in a college football game for just the fourth time since 2009. The Tide have won their last three games as underdogs, including a dominating 41-24 victory over this UGA team in last month’s SEC Championship.

Many are confused why Alabama is an underdog to Georgia considering they just beat them in convincing fashion. Oddsmakers made UGA almost a touchdown favorite over Alabama back in December based on their power ratings. One game isn’t going to drastically shift the line.

The Crimson Tide will be missing a few key pieces for their rematch with Georgia, including WR John Metchie (ACL). The senior had six catches for 97 yards and a TD in the first half of the SEC Championship. The Tide are also expected to be without starting DB Josh Jobe (foot).

Alabama punched its ticket to Indianapolis with a 27-6 win over Cincinnati in the CFP semifinal. QB Bryce Young passed for three touchdowns, while running back Brian Robinson Jr. had his biggest game of the season, rushing for nearly 200 yards vs the Bearcats.

Bulldogs Aim to End Title Drought

Georgia can capture its first National Title since 1980 by beating Alabama in the CFP National Championship. The Tide have been UGA’s kryptonite, beating Georgia in seven straight meetings. The Bulldogs lost in overtime to Alabama in their last National Title game appearance (2018).

Although Alabama dominated Georgia in the SEC Championship, the Bulldogs have been the more consistent team throughout the season. Georgia ranks second nationally in total defense, holding eight opponents to seven or fewer points.

Georgia will reportedly field it’s healthiest team yet for the CFP National Championship. Elite wide receiver George Pickens is back to full health, while running back Kendall Milton is expected to suit up in Indianapolis after missing the SEC Championship with a knee injury.

UGA earned a berth in the National Championship game with a 34-11 victory over Michigan in the Orange Bowl. The Bulldogs bullied the Wolverines, holding UM without a TD until 4:25 remaining. UGA QB Stetson Bennett was a standout, passing for 310 yards and three TDs.

Georgia vs Alabama Betting Trends

There are some important betting trends to keep in mind when betting the CFP National Championship Game between Georgia and Alabama. The Crimson Tide are 8-6-0 against the spread this season, while the Bulldogs are 9-5-0.

Both Alabama and Georgia have been efficient covering the spread in marquee games. Alabama is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 playoff games, while Georgia is 7-2 ATS in its last nine bowl/playoff games. Both teams covered the spread in their respective CFP Semifinals.

Alabama has covered the spread in the last two meetings against Georgia. The underdog in Georgia vs Alabama is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings. When it comes to the total, the “over” is 4-0-1 in the Tide’s last five National Championship games.

Georgia vs Alabama Pick & Prediction

Can Georgia finally slay the dragon and beat their Alabama rivals? Kirby Smart is 0-4 all-time vs Nick Saban and Stetson Bennett is 0-2 in his career vs the Tide. Oddsmakers know this could be UGA’s best-ever shot, as the betting line speaks volumes to Georgia’s talent.

Bennett needs to clean up the turnovers, as he’s thrown five picks in two games vs the Tide. When you look at the last four QB’s to beat Alabama (Zach Calzada, Bo Nix, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence), they all balled out and didn’t throw a single pick.

Expect Georgia to lean heavily on their run game vs Alabama with Milton joining Zamir White and James Cook in a loaded backfield. UGA should also be much-better defensively and get consistent pressure on Bryce Young. UGA was the only team not to sack Young this year.

Even though Alabama is a little banged-up, it’s very hard to bet against Nick Saban in an underdog role. That’s why the UGA first-half spread is the best bet. Georgia has outscored Alabama 75-58 in the first half of the last four meetings and should start strong once again in Indianapolis.
