TCU Through Ranked Gauntlet But…

After a fourth consecutive win over a ranked opponent, the TCU Horned Frogs have to feel some relief. However, next up is an West Virginia Mountaineers team looking to honestly pull off an upset. There is still a long way to go in the season and Max Duggan will have to play like he did against Oklahoma State and Kansas State for the Horned Frogs to win once again.

Surprising to some, TCU is 5-1-1 ATS whereas the Mountaineers are 4-3.

The odd part is that the spread moved into the 7.5-point range pretty quickly from 7. TCU, under Sonny Dykes, is an offense-first team that tries to play downhill defensively. West Virginia is likely to give up 300+ yards passing. It is more of a question if Duggan and the TCU rushing attack watched video of what Texas Tech did last week to West Virginia.

If one goes back the last two weeks, the Mountaineers have allowed 88 points and over 1,180 yards of offense. Duggan and the Horned Frogs offense has to be primed and ready.

Last week against Kansas State, it was the TCU defense that knocked the Wildcats’ quarterbacks and running backs around. They slowed down the Wildcats who averaged almost 250 yards rushing to 150 yards. West Virginia’s offense is nowhere near as stout as what they have faced the past four weeks. Bluntly, TCU has to stay focused, cause a few turnovers, and move to the next one.

West Virginia Has Almost Mission Impossible

Head coach Neal Brown has endured a rough season with West Virginia. As they try to get bowl eligible, the prospect of a fifth loss is almost as good as reality. Again, when a team allows 590 yards of offense in back-to-back weeks, that is a problem. Now, the Mountaineers are facing the top offense in the Big 12. Unfortunately, it appears West Virginia’s offense is going to have to have the game of its life on Saturday.

Also, West Virginia understands its schedule keeps getting more difficult. They need to find ways to win and the Mountaineers might not be able to. After TCU, they go up versus Oklahoma, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State to end the season. Oh by the way, West Virginia was throttled offensively and defensively by Texas Tech last week. That score was only 48-10.

Could the writing be on the wall? West Virginia had higher expectations this season that clearly are not close to coming to fruition. Worse, J.T. Daniels just is not enough of an answer. He has just six interceptions but only ten touchdowns on the season. The offense does not have the punch to keep up with the offense of the top teams in the Big-12. Tony Mathis and CJ Donaldson are nice running backs. Bryce-Ford Wheaton is a solid receiver. However, there are no game-breakers, and to beat TCU, one needs a few at least.

West Virginia’s projected NCAAF win total of 5.5 is in jeopardy of going under.

TCU vs West Virginia Prediction

This is the one game where the Over comes close but connects.

West Virginia’s defense is too beaten down to offer much resistance to the Horned Frogs.

TCU to cover 7.5-points is not outrageous. Take the Horned Frogs to cover the spread as road favorites.

Picks: Over 69 (-110), TCU -7.5 (-110)
