  • Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes dislocated his right kneecap in Thursday’s win over the Denver Broncos.
  • Early reports indicate that Mahomes, the reigning league MVP, will miss at least three weeks.
  • Avoid the Chiefs Super Bowl futures for now until we know the MRI results.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended their two-game losing streak on Thursday when they topped the Denver Broncos 30-6 but the win cost them mightily.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes injured his knee and is likely to miss at least three weeks. The Chiefs Super Bowl odds have tumbled from +800 to +1200.

Are they worth a bet or is this bad news?

Chiefs Beat Broncos, Lose Mahomes

The Broncos scored on their opening drive on Thursday night and then packed it in the rest of the way. After going up 6-0, they watched the Chiefs score the final 30 points of the game en route to their fifth loss of the season.

While the game was mostly a yawn, the big news was that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was lost to a dislocated right kneecap. The best-case scenario seems to be that he’ll be out for three weeks, but Mahomes is having an MRI on Friday. If there are any issues with the ligaments, he could be out much longer.

For what it’s worth, the Chiefs much-maligned defense stepped up and played their best game of the season. They entered the day with just 11 sacks on the season but they picked up eight on Thursday – including a strip-sack fumble that the Chiefs recovered and ran back for a touchdown.

The Chiefs defense could get off the field against the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts over the last two weeks but they held the Broncos to just 1-of-13 on third downs and limited them to just 3.2 yards per play.

Chiefs Upcoming Schedule Is Challenging

The Chiefs are 5-2, and given the state of the AFC, they’re in great shape to make the playoffs. Only seven of the AFC’s teams have a winning record.

However, their Super Bowl hopes could take a big hit if they can’t maintain their seeding without Mahomes out the next few weeks.

The Chiefs have tricky schedule upcoming as they’ll host the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings in the next two weeks. After that, they’ll visit the Tennessee Titans. Matt Moore did a decent job filling in for Mahomes on Thursday but the Chiefs will have to tread water without the league’s reigning MVP.

Can the Defense & Running Game Step Up?

It really feels like the Chiefs were relying on Mahomes all too much, so – in some weird way – this might be a good thing.

We immediately saw the beleaguered defense step up with their best game of the season. The same went for running back LeSean McCoy, who had 64 rushing yards on 12 attempts. That was his best total since Week 1.

The question is can they keep this up? Andy Reid has worked miracles with quarterbacks in the past. When the Philadelphia Eagles had to rely on guys like A.J. Feeley and Koy Detmer for short periods of time, they did enough. We also saw that with the Chiefs with Chase Daniel last season when he played well in his two games.

For this to work, though, the Chiefs running game has to be far more effective than we’ve seen so far and the defense has to find ways to get off the field. It may have worked against the 2-5 Broncos but the next two teams who are visiting are a combined 9-3.

What’s the Best Bet?

There’s simply no way that you can invest in Chiefs futures right now not knowing the MRI results on Mahomes’ knee. If he’s out for the season, you’re not going to want to be caught holding a Chiefs’ Super Bowl ticket.

At the same time, the Chiefs Super Bowl hopes haven’t really changed much. This might wake the defense and running game up, and if Mahomes returns to a team in three weeks that’s more well-rounded and not so reliant on him, we might start to see the Chiefs that we did a year ago.

For now, it makes no sense to bet the Chiefs. Wait to hear the news on Mahomes’ knee, watch how they do for the next three weeks and then make your decision. The odds should sink between now and then.
