  • Carolina Panthers WR Rashard Higgins (illness) is out for the NFL Week 10 TNF game against the Atlanta Falcons
  • The Falcons will be missing two key defensive backs in cornerback AJ Terrell (hamstring) and safety Erik Harris (foot)
  • A complete analysis of the Falcons v Panthers inactive and injury reports is following in this story

The Atlanta Falcons will be thin in the defensive backfield for their NFL Week 10 TNF game against their NFC South rivals the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, their own injury issues at wide receiver might be making it more challenging for the Panthers to be taking advantage of the situation.

Atlanta is confirming that cornerback AJ Terrell (hamstring) and safety Erik Harris (football) will both be out of action for Thursday’s game. For the Panthers, WR Rashard Higgins (illness) is also listing as out for the contest.

It’s doubtful that either of these situations are impacting the odds. Currently,  Atlanta is set as 2.5-point road favorites. Just two weeks ago, the Falcons beat the Panthers 37-34 in overtime at Atlanta. As a 4-point pick in that game, the Falcons were failing to cover. However, it’s Atlanta that is garnering significant wagering support in both the spread and the moneyline in the Falcons vs Panthers betting splits.

Atlanta Falcons Injury Report

Beyond their issues at defensive back, the Falcons are also bereft of choices at left guard. This week, both Mike Hennessy (knee) and Elijah Wilkinson (knee) were joining Jalen Mayfield (back) on injured reserve.

There’s a dearth of available guards on the Falcons depth chart. It’s Colby Gossett, listed as the top reserve at RG, who will slide over to make the start at LG. Gossett has already started one game at LG this season. He was replacing Hennessy last week when the latter was hurt.

Backup tackle Chuma Edge (personal) is questionable. Depth tight Feleipe Franks (calf) is out.

Carolina Panthers Injury Report

Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard (ankle) is showing with an injury designation as questionable for this game. If he’s limited, look for D’Onta Foreman to be carrying the ball and the load. He ended up rushing for 118 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the Week 8 game against the Falcons.

Starting LCB Donte Jackson, was also enjoying a strong game two weeks ago against Atlanta. He’s questionable due to an ankle injury. Jackson made four tackles and intercepted a pass in that Week 8 contest. He wasn’t playing in last week’s loss to the Bengals. Backup safety Juston Burris (concussion) is out.

Two other starters – RDT Matt Ioannidis (concussion) and RT Taylor Moton (illness)  – are also listed as questionable. However, both were full practice participants this week and are expecting to play.

How Could Injuries Affect Falcons vs Panthers Lines?

One key factor worthy of mentioning is who’s no longer hurt. For the Falcons, versatile RB Cordarrelle Patterson isn’t carrying an injury designation. Patterson was activated off IR for last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He was scoring both Atlanta TDs in that game. A Patterson anytime touchdown scorer might be worth playing in the Falcons vs Panthers player props.

Carolina is activating QB Sam Darnold from IR. Last season’s QB1 for the Panthers, Darnold has been out since suffering an ankle injury in Carolina’s NFL preseason finale against Buffalo. Darnold returned to practice the third week on October. Panthers coach Steve Wilks is already declaring PJ Walker as his Week 10 starter. Should Walker falter again like in last week’s debacle against Cincinnati, might there be a chance that Darnold will get a look?

In the defensive backfield, Cornell Armstrong has been filling in for Terrell since he was hurt in Week 7 against the Bengals. There’s also Rashad Fenton, acquired from Kansas City at the NFL trade deadline. He may become a factor with a couple of weeks of learning Atlanta’s defensive system under his belt.

Jovan Moffatt, a recent signee to Atlanta’s 53-player roster from the practice squad, will be stepping in for Harris as the primary reserve at safety.

DJ Moore will be maintaining his status as the primary receiver in the Panthers offensive scheme. Look for Terrace Marshall Jr to be the recipient of additional targeting with Higgins out of the picture.
