  • NFL Survivor Pools have become extremely popular, though not many people get to participate in them for too many weeks of the season
  • Gain an edge on the field in your Survivor Pool for the 2026-27 season by taking a more calculated and strategical approach to making your picks
  • See the four smartest pick paths to take in Survivor Pools this year below

NFL Survivor Pools have become a staple for many football fans, and a big part of why is the simplicity of these pools. All you have to do is a pick a team who is going to win their game the coming week, with the only stipulation being that you cannot use a team more than once. While the pool’s structure is simple, actually picking a winner each week is often not as simple as it seems.

Many participants fall victim to crazy upsets, but others don’t plan ahead very well and leave themselves with difficult decisions as the season progresses. While I cannot prevent those massive upsets, I can help with the preparation and planning ahead. I have mapped out the four best paths to take for your Survivor Pool picks this season, each using a different method for making the picks, with one being the most optimal, in my opinion (and according to the data). You can start by comparing all four paths against each other, and then I dive into each of them individually to discuss the pros and cons.

One thing to keep in mind as you take this in is that these are the spreads for every game of the season right now. These spreads will change as teams over/under-perform versus expectations and injuries occur. So, there will be some pivots needed, especially if the Dolphins/Cardinals are better than expected, but this is a very good place to start. You can see all the current lines for the upcoming week on our NFL odds tool.

If you haven’t joined a Survivor Pool yet, or are looking for / open to joining more, Splash Sports and Polymarket have teamed up to offer a $21M Survivor Pool for the 2026-27 season. Six specific weeks act as the structural anchors for the entire 2026 schedule, with 3 out of 4 models locking into the exact same pick:

WeekConsensus PickMatchupSpreadPaths In AgreementLone DissenterReason for Divergence
Wk 1JAX Jaguarsvs CLE-8.5Paths 2, 3, 4Path 1 (LAC -10)Path 1 greedily burns the Chargers on Day 1.
Wk 7DEN Broncos@ ARI-7.5Paths 1, 2, 4Path 3 (HOU -5.5)Path 3 saves Denver for Week 13 vs Miami.

Wk 13PHI Eagles@ ARI-8.5Paths 1, 2, 4Path 3 (DEN -9.5)Path 3 burned Philly in Week 6 vs CAR.

The most fascinating finding in the data is the near-total alignment between Path 1 (Pure Chalk) and Path 2 (EV Optimal).

Across a 10-week span from October through mid-December, Path 1 and Path 2 share 9 identical picks:

  • Week 6: LA Rams (-13.5)
  • Week 7: Denver Broncos (-7.5)
  • Week 8: Dallas Cowboys (-10.5)
  • Week 9: Seattle Seahawks (-13.5)
  • Week 11: KC Chiefs (-11.5)
  • Week 12: Cincinnati Bengals (-6.5)
  • Week 13: Philadelphia Eagles (-8.5)
  • Week 14: Chicago Bears (-5.5)
  • Week 15: Green Bay Packers (-10.5)

For the final three weeks of the season, Path 2 (EV Optimal) and Path 3 (Late-Season Preservation) merge into a 100% identical 3-week closing sequence:

  • Week 16: BAL Ravens vs CLE (-10.0)
  • Week 17: BUF Bills @ MIA (-7.5)
  • Week 18: NE Patriots vs MIA (-10.5)

Even when the paths disagree on which team to pick, they almost all agree on which team to target. The single biggest unifying factor across the entire schedule is opposing the Arizona Cardinals:

  • Weeks 6–9: Targeted in 7 of 8 possible path slots (Rams, Broncos, Cowboys, Seahawks).
  • Week 11: Targeted by 3 of 4 paths (Chiefs).
  • Week 13: Targeted by 3 of 4 paths (Eagles).

Between Weeks 6 and 13, at least three of the four models are picking against Arizona in 6 out of 8 weeks. In a survivor pool, following the Arizona fade schedule gives you the safest point-spread floor in football.

Here is what the math says about each of these four paths:

As I mentioned, I believe there is a clear optimal path to take, and the data says the same. The EV Optimal (Path 2) appears to be the safest of the bunch. But let’s dive into each one further below.

Path 1 – Pure Chalk / Maximum Weekly Survival

WeekPickMatchupSpreadWin Probability
Week 1LA Chargersvs ARI-10.077.1%
Week 2SF 49ersvs MIA-10.578.2%
Week 3DET Lionsvs NYJ-9.576.0%

Week 13PHI Eagles@ ARI-8.573.6%
Week 14CHI Bears@ MIA-5.565.9%
Week 15GB Packersvs MIA-10.578.2%
Week 16NO Saintsvs ARI-5.565.9%
Week 17MIN Vikings@ NYJ-3.560.3%
Week 18HOU Texansvs TEN-7.069.9%

Philosophy: Simply takes the largest available point spread every single week without looking ahead.

Pros: Maximizes your chance of surviving Weeks 1–3 by taking the most lopsided early games (Chargers -10, 49ers -10.5, Lions -9.5).

Cons: Causes severe “firepower depletion” late in the year. By burning Baltimore, Detroit, and Buffalo early, you are forced into fragile road favorites in December and January (Week 14 Bears -5.5 at Miami, Week 16 Saints -5.5 vs. Arizona, and Week 17 Vikings -3.5 at NY Jets).

This tends to be the most popular philosophy used in Survivor Pools, and you can see why it often crumbles when you take a step back and look at the full picture. I do appreciate that getting yourself to Week 14 might be enough to win your pool, but not always. Plus, some of the heavier favorites from Weeks 5-9 may not be as heavily favored when we get there.

Path 2 – Future Value / Global Optimal

WeekPickMatchupSpreadWin Probability
Week 1JAX Jaguarsvs CLE-8.573.6%
Week 2LA Chargersvs LV-8.573.6%

Week 16BAL Ravensvs CLE-10.077.1%
Week 17BUF Bills@ MIA-7.571.1%
Week 18NE Patriotsvs MIA-10.578.2%

Philosophy: Solved globally via the Hungarian Assignment Algorithm to maximize the cumulative product of 18 win probabilities: maxw=118P(Winw)    minw=118ln(Pw)\max \prod_{w=1}^{18} P(\text{Win}_w) \iff \min \sum_{w=1}^{18} -\ln(P_w)max∏w=118P(Winw)⟺min∑w=118−ln(Pw)

Pros: Produces the highest theoretical 18-week survival rate (0.555%) and the highest average spread (-9.2 points).

Key Moves:

  • Uses Jacksonville (-8.5 vs. CLE) in Week 1 instead of burning the Chargers or 49ers.
  • Preserves Baltimore (-10.0 vs. CLE in Wk 16), Buffalo (-7.5 at MIA in Wk 17), and New England (-10.5 vs. MIA in Wk 18) to (hopefully) lock in double-digit or heavy favorite security during the volatile final month.

As I have said, these spreads are going to change after we get a real look at all 32 teams. However, this path offers the safest picks at the moment throughout the 18-week season, proven using a credible algorithm. While you are passing on some slightly heavier favorites early on in the season, at no point does it have you taking a favorite of less than 7.5 points until Week 10. Simply put, this is safe!

For what it’s worth, it is my preferred method for making my own Survivor Pool picks. If you want to use this method as well, you can sign up with Splash Sports now and enter their $21M pool.

Path 3 – Late-Season Preservation

WeekPickMatchupSpreadWin Probability
Week 1JAX Jaguarsvs CLE-8.573.6%
Week 2SF 49ersvs MIA-10.578.2%
Week 3GB Packersvs ATL-7.571.1%

Week 16BAL Ravensvs CLE-10.077.1%
Week 17BUF Bills@ MIA-7.571.1%
Week 18NE Patriotsvs MIA-10.578.2%

Philosophy: Prohibits burning the top tier of late-season juggernauts (BUF, BAL, KC, SF, PHI, DET, LAR) during Weeks 1–11.

Pros: Reaches November and December with a loaded chamber. While the rest of your pool is scraping by on 3-point division rivalries in Weeks 13–18, you are holding teams favored by 7.5 to 10.5 points.

Key Moves: Navigates Weeks 4–7 using reliable mid-tier teams facing favorable matchups (Bears -8.5 vs. NYJ, Eagles -6.5 vs. CAR, Texans -5.5 vs. NYG).

Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of this method due to the same point I keep making: these spreads will change. One of the teams you are trying to preserve may not be worth preserving, and you are taking two teams favored by less than a touchdown before Week 8. I don’t like that risk early on.

Path 4 – Contrarian / High-Leverage

WeekPickMatchupSpreadWin Probability
Week 1JAX Jaguarsvs CLE-8.573.6%
Week 2SEA Seahawks@ ARI-10.077.1%
Week 3DET Lionsvs NYJ-9.576.0%

Week 15NY Giantsvs CLE-4.563.1%
Week 16LA Chargers@ MIA-7.069.9%
Week 17DAL Cowboysvs NYG-4.563.1%
Week 18HOU Texansvs TEN-7.069.9%

Philosophy: Designed specifically for large pools (100+ entries). When 40%+ of the pool piles onto a single mega-favorite, this path pivots to a strong secondary favorite (spread 6.0\ge -6.0≥−6.0).

Pros: If the public mega-favorite gets upset, 35–50% of your competition is eliminated in a single afternoon, while your entry advances and keeps the mega-chalk alive for a future week.

Key Moves:

  • Week 2: Pivots off the massive public chalk (49ers -10.5) to Seattle (-10.0 at Arizona).
  • Week 5: Avoids the heavy public pick (Patriots -8.5 vs. Raiders) to take Cincinnati (-6.0 at Miami).
  • Week 9: Fades the overwhelming field pick on Seattle (-13.5) by pivoting to San Francisco (-8.5 vs. Raiders).

I don’t hate this method, but it makes two flawed assumptions: (1) a large portion of your pool is on the heaviest favorite each week, and (2) you know this to be true. Most Survivor Pools do not allow anyone to see the picks of the other competitors until every pick is submitted / games have begun – you could get a sense of this from the NFL public betting data. But if your pool does allow it, you will need to play this one by ear, and could potentially find a nice mix between this path and Path 2.
