  • Sportsbooks have posted odds on the next NFL coach to be fired
  • Is Dirk Koetter a slam dunk to lose his job next?
  • Can he overcome Jameis Winston’s demise and an atrocious defense?

Dirk Koetter has got to be feeling the heat.

He’s won once in his last five outings; his defense is allowing a league high 33.3 points per game; and his quarterbacks insist on throwing the ball to the other team.

Now, with the Bucs dwelling in the NFC South cellar, sportsbooks have made Koetter the favorite to be the next NFL coach fired.

Odds to be the Next Coach Fired

Next NFL Coach Fired Record Odds
Dirk Koetter 3-4 +350
Vance Joseph 3-5 +400
Steve Wilks 2-6 +550
Adam Gase 4-4 +700
Pat Shurmur 1-7 +700
Todd Bowles 3-5 +900
Sean McDermott 2-6 +1000
Doug Marrone 3-5 +1400
Jason Garrett 3-4 +1400
John Harbaugh 4-4 +1400

Just three weeks ago, Koetter was in contention to be the first coach to lose his job, but a lot has changed since then.  The Browns finally gave Hue Jackson his pink slip, and the Cowboys demolished the Jaguars, earning Jason Garrett some breathing room.

The Ship is Sinking in Tampa Bay

There’s on old football saying, “if you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none.”

Benching Jameis Winston for journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick is just the latest in a series of last ditch efforts by Koetter to try to save his job.

It’s also a nightmare for the Bucs organization, as it highlights Koetter’s inability to turn Winston, a former first overall draft pick, into a franchise quarterback.

Bucs are Historically Bad on Defense

Tampa’s turnover woes pale in comparison to what’s happening on defense. Under Koetter’s guidance, the 2018 Buccaneers have a chance to be one of the worst defensive teams of all-time.

Tampa Bay is on pace to allow a record 69 touchdowns and 532 points, which would be one point shy of the most all-time.

They have the worst passing defense per DVOA and have forced just one interception. Their 38-point loss to the Bears in Week 4 was so ugly, it left Koetter wondering why he was even still employed.

Dirk will Walk the Plank Next

The Buccaneers will be underdogs in their next two games and it’s unlikely Koetter survives back-to-back losses.

He’s created a quarterback quagmire and his defense can’t keep opponents out of the endzone.  It won’t be long before his name his added to the list of failed 2016 hires.

Grab the +350 while you still can.
