Defense Comes Up Huge

Buffalo’s defense ranked just 14th in the NFL in total yards allowed during the regular season. However, the unit came up big Saturday night as the Bills advanced to the AFC title game for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

Taron Johnson’s 101-yard interception return for a touchdown with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter proved to be the big play for the Bills.

Instead of the Ravens being on the verge of tying the game, Buffalo’s lead expanded to 17-3. It matched the longest interception return in NFL playoff history.

The Bills also played solid run defense, holding the Ravens to 150 yards on 32 carries. Baltimore led the league in yards rushing during the regular season.

The defense knocked Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson out on the game on the first play from scrimmage after Johnson’s touchdown. Jackson sustained a concussion when he was trying to get rid of the ball after a snap from Patrick Mekari sailed over his head.

Jackson was limited to 34 yards rushing on nine carries. He also passed for 162 yards.

Offense Struggles

Conversely, the high-scoring Bills had a lackluster performance offensively as they managed just 223 total yards and one touchdown.

Allen completed 23 of 37 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown – a 3-yarder to Stefon Diggs – on a windy winter night in Western New York. Allen was also limited to just three yards rushing on seven attempts.

Diggs had eight receptions for 106 yards and the score and he and Allen had reason to feel good since, after all, the Bills did win.

However, the Bills managed just 32 yards rushing in 16 attempts and rookie Tyler Bass missed two of his three field goal attempts.

The Bills will need more offensive production if they are going to be able to beat either Chiefs or Browns in the AFC Championship Game or the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints or Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl on February 7th in Tampa.

Coming Up Next

If the Chiefs win Sunday, then the Bills will hit the road and play the defending Super Bowl champions at Arrowhead Stadium. If the Browns win then the title game will be played at Bills Stadium.

The Bills lost to the Chiefs 26-17 in Week 6 at home as 5.5-point underdogs and did not play the Browns this season.

Though he threw two touchdown passes, Allen had his least-productive game of the season in Week 6. He completed just 14 of 27 passes for 122 yards and was intercepted once.

Buffalo could not contain rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who had a season-high 161 yards rushing on 26 carries. Patrick Mahomes played an efficient game, connecting on 21 of 26 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns.

But who did the Bills beat the last time they played for the AFC title?

Buffalo showed Saturday night it can win ugly with defense rather than just outscore the opposition. Being able to do that comes in handy this time of year and is why the Bills are worth a wager at +350.
