Justin Herbert and  Los Angeles Chargers (1-1, 1-0 away) are taking on Patrick Mahomes and the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs (1-1, 1-0 home) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm ET this Sunday on CBS.

The Chargers are coming in after dropping a heartbreaker to the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 on a last-second Greg Zuerlein field goal. Justin Herbert was once again a bright spot for the Chargers throwing for 338 yards and a score. Meanwhile, the Chiefs fumbled away their comeback attempt against the Baltimore Ravens Monday night, losing 36-35.

The Chiefs are favored by 6.5 points in this one after opening at -7. According to SBD, the Chargers have only taken in 46% of the bets but that’s equated to 85% of the money which is very interesting. As for the total, it opened at 52.5 at most shops only to be bet up to 55 by Friday morning.

Los Angeles Chargers vs Kansas City Chiefs Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Los Angeles Chargers +6.5 (-110) +260 O 54.5 (-110)
Kansas City Chiefs -6.5 (-110) -335 U 54.5 (-110)

Odds as of September 23rd at DraftKings.

The Los Angeles Chargers

One team in the NFL that checks every box in terms of fun is the Los Angeles Chargers. They lost a heartbreaker to the Dallas Cowboys last week 20-17, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Led by Justin Herbert, the Chargers can be expected to be in every game.

Against the Cowboys, Herbert topped 300 yards passing for the second time this season in as many tries. It’s obvious so far that the Chargers are going to unleash him and they have the weapons to do so with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. So far both receivers have seen 20-plus targets and it looks like the targets won’t stop anytime soon.

The Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL. He’s already been to two Super Bowls in his young career and he will go to more. When you can make throws like this, it’s hard to imagine many losing many games.

Mahomes was fantastic again in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday night. He threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns on the night and was headed for a game-winning drive with 1:24 left on the game clock. It was then that Clyde Edwards-Helaire fumbled leading to the Ravens just running out the clock.

Who Wins?

The Los Angeles Chargers are struggling to score when they get into the red zone which is why we haven’t seen an outburst yet. It was the same story last season with a different coaching staff so some are saying it’s on Justin Herbert. I think it’s more about the opponent.

So far the Chargers have played the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Football Team who have allowed opponents to score touchdowns in the red zone less than half the time. Obviously the Chargers are in those statistics but both teams were decent in the metric last season with Washington being elite. The same can’t be said about Kansas City.

So far this season, the Chiefs have allowed a touchdown every time their opponents have found their way into the red zone. They were worst in the NFL last season in this metric and they are worst so far this season. Because of this, I think the Chargers will be able to score enough points to keep this thing close.

  • Pick: Los Angeles Chargers +6.5 (-110) – Wager 1.10 units to win 1 unit
  • NFL ATS + Totals Record: 0-2 -2.2 units
