Chase Winovich has turned heads by racking up three sacks in four games as a member of the Patriots, and has jumped onto the board for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
  • Chase Winovich has three sacks over his last three games
  • Playing on the best defense in the league so far, his NFL DROY odds climbing
  • Is he worth betting?

Chase Winovich had a strong career at Michigan and was drafted by the Patriots in the third round with the expectation he’d be a spot contributor this season, working into the defensive end rotation.

Yet, through Week 4 of the NFL season that is not the case, as he has already racked up three sacks and has been a force to be reckoned on the defensive line. Since his recent success, he is now a top-seven NFL DROY odds.

Is Winovich Worth Betting?

Winovich has been a pleasant surprise for the New England Patriots this season as he has three sacks through four games.

When the season started, Winovich was not expected to even be in the Rookie of the Year conversation. In July he had +2500 odds which then fell to +2800 on September 5th.

But after three consecutive games with a sack, his odds have dropped to +1400, and put him firmly in the running for the award.

He even caught the attention of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin.

“He’s had an awesome preseason,” said Tomlin, according to 247Sports. “I really have a lot of respect for him. Through draft preparation I saw a lot of him. He’s a quality edge rusher.

“His hand usage, his awareness in terms of his rush. His overall in-game awareness. His motor,” said Tomlin. “He had a lot of positive attributes.”

Who’s the Best Bet?

Right now, I still like Nick Bosa to win the rookie of the year. I think he will have a very good second half and lead all rookies in sacks. He is already an impact edge rusher for the 49ers, as he’s earned praised throughout the organization.

“It was really slowed down for me,” Bosa said to NBC Sports. “I think I played really well. I think our D-line played unbelievable.

“It was so much fun. I don’t even care that I missed a couple (of sacks) because we got the win and other guys had great games. I’m just glad I did my part.”

“I’ve been using speed so much, and I have really good power,” Bosa said. “Just sometimes I don’t use it. Before the rush, I think, ‘I got to use power; got to use power.’ Then, I go speed and I go, ‘Why did I do that? I got to use power.’

“I brought power almost all day (against the Steelers). Hit them with a couple speed moves, but I knew I could get underneath him and power him, so I did.”

Bosa is already at the calibre of his brother Joey who plays for the Chargers, and because of that I think he’ll continue to rack up the stats and take home DROY this season.

Pick: Nick Bosa (+500)
