  • The Chiefs Super Bowl odds sit at +1400 after Week 8’s loss to the Packers
  • They are tied for the fifth-best Super Bowl odds with the Rams, Cowboys, and Vikings
  • Patrick Mahomes is expected to return in two weeks against the Titans

After a 31-24 loss to the Packers on Sunday Night Football in the absence of Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs now have the fifth-best Super Bowl odds in the league. It’s been a rocky few weeks for Kansas City, and they’ve seen their odds drop accordingly.

This drop comes after a 31-24 loss on Sunday Night Football against the Packers. In the place of Mahomes, Matt Moore made the start, and played well, going 24-for-36 for 267 yards and 2 touchdowns. He proved to be a solid enough band-aid for the one or two games that Mahomes may miss.

Mahomes’ Return Not a Guaranteed Fix

However, the Chiefs problems are far bigger than one of two weeks. Even before the injury to Mahomes, this offense wasn’t firing on all cylinders. In the three games prior to his injury, Mahomes was completing only 55% of his attempts in a stretch in which the Chiefs went 1-2.

At the beginning of October, Kansas City had +400 odds to win the Super Bowl. Those odds had sunk to +867 prior to Sunday, before finally moving to +1400 after Sunday’s loss to Green Bay.

In the next two weeks, the Chiefs will play host to Minnesota, then travel to play the Titans in Nashville. It’s possible that he can return against the Vikings, but right now, it looks as though he’ll miss one more game before returning for the matchup with Tennessee.

It will certainly be a positive when Mahomes returns for Moore, but that isn’t necessarily a guarantee that everything will run smoothly upon his return.

Chiefs Still Eyeing a Playoff Bye

Kansas City is currently the only team in the AFC West with a winning record. Holding off the Raiders, Chargers, and Broncos should be a very manageable task for the Chiefs. However, it is the bigger AFC playoff picture that is concerning for Kansas City’s Super Bowl odds.

The Patriots, at 8-0, are headed for the top seed, as well as a playoff bye and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. As far as the second seed, and the other bye, the Chiefs are still in play, but they have a bit of an uphill battle.

Currently, both the Ravens and Colts have a better record, at a 5-2 mark. The Chiefs 5-3 record also ties them with Houston, who beat Kansas City when they met in Week 6. The Chiefs are absolutely still in play for the second seed, but they’ll have to overtake those three teams ahead of them that are playing very well right now.

At the start of the year, the AFC was viewed as the Patriots, Chiefs, and then everybody else. Now, it appears to be the Patriots, followed by a group of four really good teams. As the Super Bowls odds have reflected, it’s no longer just a cakewalk to the AFC Championship Game.
