  • It’s a Super Bowl LVIII rematch when the San Francisco 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET
  • At 5-0, Kansas City is the last unbeaten team in the AFC. They’re slight underdogs Sunday, just like they were in last year’s Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers (3-3, 3-3 ATS) host the two-time defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs (5-0, 4-1 ATS) at Levi’s Stadium Sunday at 4:25 p.m.

Kansas City has won 11 straight games dating back to last season. This is the 10th time in the Super Bowl Era of the NFL there has been a regular season rematch of the previous year’s Super Bowl. The defending champions are 6-3 in those contests. That bodes well for KC.

We got more insights and analysis for this marquee game of Week 7 in the NFL.

The Niners have stayed as slight favorites since the line opened. Caesars is giving San Francisco 1.5-points, but most books have them as one-point favorites. The over/under is at 47, but FanDuel had it at 47.5.

The Chiefs are 4-1 against the spread this season and 9-1 in their last 10 games against the spread. They have been a tough total bet. KC is 2-3 over/under this season.

Even though the Chiefs are listed as the underdog, the moneyline bet on KC at DraftKings is +102, and is -122 on San Francisco. That’s the best odds for a moneyline bet.

KC is KC, Right?

Through five games in 2024, Chiefs quarterback and megastar Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 1,235 yards. Through five games in 2023, Mahomes threw for 1,287. Go back to 2022, it was 1,398.

We watch Mahomes now and think, why isn’t he making all these incredible plays all the time, but the truth is he picks his spots. The offense is still middle of the pack. It ranks 11 in yards and just 15 in points. Four of their five wins have been by a touchdown or less.

It’s just that in the final five minutes of a close NFL game, Mahomes and company find a way to get it done.

Injuries Everywhere

San Francisco has had horrible injury luck this season. Christian McCaffrey is expected back, but when? Deebo Samuel is dealing with a wrist injury. Even two San Francisco kickers have gotten injured. The team signed Packers cast-off Anders Carlson this week.

But the Niners will get no sympathy from Kansas City. The Chiefs have lost leading wide receiver Rashee Rice to a knee injury for the season. They grabbed former star Kareem Hunt off the scrap heap, and in two games, he’s already the Chiefs leading rusher. Juju Smith-Schuster had 130 yards in the Chiefs win over the Saints last Monday night.

Chiefs vs 49ers Prediction

  • Chiefs +1.5 (-108 at DraftKings)
  • Under 47.0 (-110 at DraftKings)

Remember Andy Reid doesn’t lose after bye weeks. It’s one of the most incredible stats in the NFL. Reid is 21-4 when his team is coming off a bye week, and is 8-3 with the Chiefs after an off week.

San Francisco is better than its record would show. They’re 10 points away from being undefeated too, but they’ve been hurt by bad execution late in games. Niners QB Brock Purdy is the one with the big offensive numbers. He’s second in the NFL in yards passing (1,629), but his completion percentage is down four points from last year.

San Francisco’s schedule is tough with the Bucs, Packers, Bills and Lions looming. The Niners still have a formidable defense with Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, but they don’t have the big play ability they had.

We expect this game to come down to the last two minutes, and for Mahomes and the Chiefs to find a way to pull it off. That’s the norm in today’s NFL. We will happily take the point and change, and when Mahomes does his magic, we will say we told you so.
