George Pickens is the newest Dallas Cowboys Diva wide receiver. Pickens has been acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 3rd Round pick, and follows in a long line of Dallas wideouts who come with serious baggage. Cowboys fans might be elated at the thought of another weapon for Dak Prescott, but online sportsbooks don’t believe the trade moves the needle.
Dallas Cowboys 2025 Futures
Dallas remains a significant longshot in the futures markets. Their 2025 Super Bowl odds barely shifted from +7500 to +7000 following the move, while they’re still a lengthy third choice to win the NFC East. The Cowboys are +3500 to win the NFC, something they haven’t done since 1996, and 24 teams have shorter odds to make the postseason.

The Pros and Cons of Pickens
Let’s look at how Pickens can help Dallas. He gives them a high upside number two receiver, one that can play exclusively on the outside. His bread and butter routes stretch the defense vertically, allowing CeeDee Lamb to dominate in the slot and over the middle, where he is an absolute nightmare to defend.
Pickens creates separation at an elite rate, posting open scores of 70 and 68 over the last two seasons. That’s good news for Dak Prescott, who ranked top-five in deep passing metrics in 2023 when he was last healthy. The Cowboys have been desperate for a complimentary piece to go alongside Lamb for multiple years, but refused to invest serious Draft or Trade capital until now.
The reason why the move isn’t being met with more glowing reviews, is due to Pickens attitude and lack of maturity. Pittsburgh was fed up his antics both on and off the field, and defenders have had an easy time getting under his skin. That’s completely thrown him off his game at times, resulting in undisciplined actions.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Pickens “has to grow up”, and while he and the team were reportedly working on a new deal, the relationship obviously was sour enough that it couldn’t be repaired.
Are the Cowboys Being Undervalued Now?
In short, no. Receiver is just one of the many issues Dallas needs to deal with. They’ve brought in a new coach, one with zero head coaching experience, and they’ve lost major pieces of their once dominant offensive line.
Defensively, they have excellent pass rushers, but the rest of the unit took a major step back from their 12-5 season in 2023. The Cowboys ranked 31st in scoring defense last season. Only four teams allowed more total yards per game, and the Dallas run defense was a punching bag for enemy offenses all season.
2024 NFL Bottom-5 Scoring Defenses
They tried to plug some of the defensive holes in the Draft, but passed on high-upside players in Round 1 in favor of a Guard. As much as Cowboys fans don’t want to hear it, this is a team in transition, and one that’s not supposed to compete for much in 2025.
Dallas Is Well Behind Its Division Rivals
That’s especially true given the strength of the NFC East. The Eagles are fresh off a Super Bowl victory, and look poised to make another run. They can overpower the Cowboys on both sides of the ball, and have elite pass rushers and corners to give Prescott, Lamb and now Pickens fits.
The Commanders are a team on the rise after their NFC Championship Game appearance, and are only going to improve in year two of the Jayden Daniels era. Washington has addressed its defensive issues and made one of the biggest moves of the offseason bringing in Deebo Samuel.
That leaves the Giants, who the Cowboys will be competing with to stay out of the NFC East cellar. Dallas’ +750 NFL Divisional odds tell you exactly what oddsmakers think about this team’s 2025 prospects. With holes on both sides of the ball, and an inexperienced coach in place, the Cowboys are fade across all NFL Futures for the upcoming season.
