  • The Kansas City Chiefs are 3.5-point favorites to win Super Bowl 55 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Defending champion KC is seeking to become the ninth team to win back-to-back Super Bowls
  • Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady was the last QB to win consecutive Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in 2004-05

In Super Bowl 55, the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Pat Mahomes are seeking to become the first QB to lead his team to consecutive Super Bowl wins since Tom Brady, QB for the opposing NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, did so for the New England Patriots in 2004-05.

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Chiefs and the Buccaneers, the two teams in this year’s NFL big game, is right here for your perusal.

When Is the Game?

Super Bowl 55 is slated for Sunday, February 7th. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm EST.

Game-time temperature is forecast to be 65 degrees, with cloudy skies and 8 mph wind.

What Station Is Broadcasting the Game and Who Are the Broadcasters We’ll Be Listening To?

CBS is carrying the call of Super Bowl 55. Jim Nantz will handle the play-by-play call, with former Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo providing expert analysis.

Nantz and Romo worked the 2019 Super Bowl as Brady and the Patriots downed the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.

Reporters Tracy Wolfson, Evan Washburn and Jay Feely and Rules Analyst Gene Steratore will also be working the game. CBS will launch its game-day coverage at 11:30 am EST.

Where Is the Game Being Played?

For the first time in Super Bowl history, a team will be playing in the big game in their home stadium. Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium is the site of Super Bowl 55.

The Buccaneers won their way to a home date on Super Bowl Sunday by winning three road playoff games. They’re just the fifth team in the history of the game to travel that route to earn a shot at the NFL title.

The Chiefs are 8-0 on the road this season.

Who Is Favored to Win?

Kansas City is a three-point favorite over the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl odds. The Chiefs opened as the 3.5-point chalk over Tampa Bay.

The last two favorites have won and covered. However, in the past 13 Super Bowls, the betting favorite is a disappointing 4-8-1.

Chiefs vs Buccaneers Super Bowl 55 Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
Kansas City Chiefs -162 -3 (-117) O 56.5 (-109)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +143 +3 (-105) U 56.5 (-112)

Odds taken Feb. 2nd at DraftKings.

The last ten times the NFC team was the betting underdog in the big game, those teams have gone 7-3 against the spread. That total includes five outright victories.

In his 10 Super Bowl appearances, this is just the second time Brady has been the QB of the underdog. In his first Super Bowl, he led the Patriots to a 20-17 win over the Rams in Super Bowl 36 as 14-point underdogs.

Tampa Bay was an impressive 4-1 ATS as a betting underdog this season. Kansas City was just 7-9 ATS as the chalk.

In the moneyline, Kansas City is the -162 favorite. Moneylines are calculated based on a $100 wager. In this case, that means if you sought to make a $100 profit by betting on the Chiefs, you’d need to wager $162.

Who Does SBD’s Score Predictor Have Winning?

According to the SBD score predictor, it’s going to be lucky #7 for Brady. The SBD score predictor is rating the final outcome as Tampa Bay 27.3-24.5 over Kansas City.

That would mean the Bucs would cover as 3-point underdogs and that for the third straight Super Bowl, the total would go under.

Who Are the Two Quarterbacks?

For the first time in NFL history, the winning QBs from the last two Super Bowls will go head to head. Mahomes won last year, while Brady was the winner in Super Bowl 53.

It’s the first time since Super Bowl 44, when Brady’s Patriots beat Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks 28-24, that both starting QBs owned a previous Super Bowl victory.  Brady won the Super Bowl in his first season as a starter. Mahomes won the Super Bowl in his second season as a starter.

Brady owns records for the most Super Bowl wins (six). However, in three seasons as a starter, Mahomes has played in three AFC Championship Games, won a Super Bowl and been named NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.  The only QB to beat Mahomes in the NFL playoffs is Brady.

In terms of numbers, there wasn’t much to choose between the two this season. Mahomes averaged 316 yards passing per game and threw for 38 touchdowns. Brady was good for 289.6 ypg and 40 TDs.

The biggest discrepancy was in interceptions. Brady was picked off twice as often as Mahomes (12-6).

Who Are the Two Teams?

The defending champion Chiefs were an NFL-best 14-2 this season. Returning champs getting back to the big game and posting the NFL’s best regular-season record are 5-4 straight up in Super Bowl games.

Tampa Bay was 7-9 last season, but the addition of Brady immediately caused a turnaround in team fortunes. The Bucs posted their first winning season since 2016 and qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2007.

The two teams met on November 29th during the 2020 NFL regular season. KC won 27-24 at Tampa Bay. Tyreek Hill caught three TD passes from Mahomes.

In Super Bowls that were regular-season rematches, the winner of the regular-season meeting is 6-7 SU in the Super Bowl.

What Are Some of the Other Ways to Bet the Super Bowl?

Approximately half the money bet on the Super Bowl will be wagered on props. There two types of Super Bowl props – game props and novelty props.

A game prop that looks truly intriguing is Mahomes to score a TD. He’s run for a TD in two of his last three postseason games. Interestingly, both were first TDs of the game. Take Mahomes at +250 to score an anytime TD. Or be bold and go for Mahomes and the game’s first TD at +1800.

Among the most popular novelty props is the color of Gatorade that will be dumped over the winning coach. Yellow (+450) has paid out in five of the past 11 Super Bowls.

The coin toss gets the Super Bowl started and it is literally a 50-50 proposition. Or is it? Tails (-103) has proven to be the winner in 29 of 54 games. That includes the last two and six of the past seven games.

Who Is Singing the Anthem?

Grammy Award-winning singers Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church will perform the Star-Spangled Banner as a duet.

YouTube video

Favorites are 9-3 SU when the anthem singer isn’t a solo act. However, the Bucs are one of the three underdogs to win the Super Bowl in that scenario.

Who Is Performing at Halftime?

Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd is this year’s halftime act.

Favorites are 0-1-1 ATS when a Canadian performs at halftime of the Super Bowl. When Tampa Bay won its lone Super Bowl title in 2003, Canada’s Shania Twain performed at halftime.

How Are You Betting the Super Bowl?

Logic points to Kansas City winning this game. However, history suggests betting against Brady is a foolhardy pursuit.

The Buccaneers have won seven in a row and are playing their best football of the season right now. Often, it isn’t the best team that wins, but rather the team that’s playing the best.

Pick: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3 (-105)
