The Colts acquired Ryan for a third-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He replaces Carson Wentz, who was traded to the Washington Commanders last week after only one season in Indianapolis.

The Colts’ Super Bowl odds improved from +3000 to +2500 once news broke that Ryan, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, was headed to Indianapolis. That gives the Colts an implied probability of 3.85% to win it all next season.
The Colts’ AFC Championship odds went from +1600 to +1300 and their AFC South odds dropped from +150 to +125.
Colts Look for Stability
The Colts are hoping Ryan brings stability to the quarterback position, which has been in flux since Andrew Luck unexpectedly retired before the 2019 season.
The Colts went with Jacoby Brissett as the starter in ‘19 before Philip Rivers served as QB1 in 2020 and Wentz held the job last season. The Colts made the playoffs in ’20 but went 9-8 in 2021 and a late-season collapse cost them a berth in the postseason.

Ryan was the Falcons’ starting QB for 14 seasons after being drafted third overall in 2008. The 36-year-old had a 120-102 record as a starter and led Atlanta to six playoff appearances, three NFC South championship,s and one NFC title.
His 59,375 career passing yards rank eighth in the NFL and Ryan’s 367 touchdown passes are ninth. During a 7-10 season in 2021, Ryan completed 67% of his passes for 3,968 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Wentz threw for 27 scores and got picked seven times last season. However, his completion rate was 62.4% and he finished 3,563 yards.
The concern about Ryan is his advancing age, and his statistics did take a dip last season. However, with the Colts’ strong running game, led by 2021 NFL rushing leader Jonathan Taylor, Ryan won’t have to handle as much of the offensive load as he did in Atlanta

If Ryan provides steady play, the Colts will be contenders to get to the Super Bowl.
Mariota Replaces Matty Ice
The trade left the Falcons looking for a starting quarterback for the first time since Ryan replaced Chris Redman at the start of the 2008 season.
After trying to trade with the Houston Texans for Deshaun Watson last weekend, the search didn’t linger. Atlanta agreed to terms with free-agent Marcus Mariota on Monday.

Mariota has not started a game since 2019, serving as the Las Vegas Raiders’ backup QB to Derek Carr the past two seasons.
The Tennessee Titans chose the Heisman Trophy winner second overall in the 2015 draft. However, they compiled a 29-32 record in his starts over five years before he ceded QB1 to Ryan Tannehill six weeks into the 2019 season.
What About Baker Mayfield?
With Watson landing with the Cleveland Browns, Baker Mayfield is out of a starting job. The Colts were considered the favorites to land Mayfield and Indianapolis was reportedly his favored destination.

However, with Ryan in Indianapolis and the New Orleans Saints ready to re-sign Jameis Winston, Mayfield’s future is extremely murky. The Carolina Panthers, who soured on Sam Darnold after only one season, seem the only possible landing spot unless Mayfield is willing to be a backup.
