  • Let’s take a closer look at how Bill O’Brien can keep his job past 2019
  • Josh McDaniels is the favorite to take over as head coach should O’Brien get fired
  • What other familiar names on the list could take over

The Houston Texans have been in a fortunate spot for the past three seasons. They have their franchise quarterback. Period. The issue with this team for ages was the lack of a strong pivot under center. The good news is they finally have the man they’ve been longing for in Deshaun Watson. The bad news is they have little else in support.

One could argue the Texans are fairly strong at the skill positions, but the offensive line remains a joke. In other words, once again their offense is lacking, while their defense has allowed as many points against as the team has points for.

If they fail to make a run to the playoffs, there is a chance Bill O’Brien could be let go as head coach, leading to sportsbooks opening a prop on who will takeover in Houston if he is shown the door.

How Bill O’Brien Can Keep His Job

The Texans were trounced in last year’s AFC Wild Card game by the Indianapolis Colts 21-7. One would think with Andrew Luck no longer leading the Colts the AFC South division should be up for grabs.

The Titans are no powerhouse, the Colts haven’t shown anything special and we have yet to see if Gardner Minshew has staying power. O’Brien has a wide open door to employment in 2020 and beyond if he plays his cards right.

What that would mean though is likely another 11-win season like just one year ago and a whole lot of luck.

They still have matchups with the Chiefs, Patriots, Ravens and surprisingly decent Bucs. Then, to add to that, they still have five more divisional match ups on the way. With an aging defensive leader and a QB entering his contract year we’re fast approaching win now time in Houston.

Josh McDaniels The Likeliest Choice

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is the favorite to take over and we’d love to see it. Not only because we think he could do some great things with that offense, but we’d also love hear the reaction when heads back to Indianapolis every year.

McDaniels hasn’t worked too much with a mobile quarterback, but his resume speaks for itself. He’d be the obvious choice for the gig should Houston break out the axe.

Other Options

Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is certainly high on the list, but we also like Byron Leftwich and Jim Harbaugh as long shots. Leftwich was a mobile QB himself and has a wealth of experience while Harbaugh has proven he can take a mobile QB to the Super Bowl as he did with Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers in 2013.

Pick: Josh McDaniels +250
