Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to return to his role as San Francisco’s starting quarterback, when the 49ers visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football in NFL Week 3 action. We preview San Francisco 49ers vs Denver Broncos.

Garoppolo has reclaimed the starter’s job in the wake of Trey Lance’s season-ending ankle injury during last weekend’s decisive 27-7 victory over Seattle.

The Broncos aim to win consecutive home games for the first time since November 2020 after eking out a narrow 16-9 victory over Houston in Week 2.

The 49ers have held steady since opening as slim 1.5-point road favorites in the NFL odds.

Start time of Sunday night’s contest is set for 8:20pm ET at Empower Field at Mile High. The game time weather forecast calls for clear skies and a temperature of 70 degrees.

49ers vs Broncos Betting History

Sunday night’s matchup marks the first meeting between these teams since December 2018. The Niners have won and covered in three of their past four dates with the Broncos, and posted a 20-14 home victory as 3-point underdogs in their most recent clash.

The Broncos have enjoyed a clear edge when facing San Francisco on home turf, winning in four of five meetings since 1982, and outpacing the 49ers by an average margin of 27 points over their past two.

Despite those big home victories, the total has gone UNDER in four of six head-to-head meetings, with the 49ers averaging just 14 points per game over their past three visits to the Mile High City.

However, steady success has eluded Denver when playing in primetime. The Broncos have lost outright in nine of their past 10 overall games played under the lights, and are also 1-7 straight up in their past eight at home.

The 49ers have also struggled in primetime, losing five of six while scoring 18 or fewer points on three occasions.

San Francisco 49ers Betting Outlook

After being largely excluded from team activities in training camp and early on in the season as the 49ers sought to trade him, Jimmy Garoppolo now returns to the starting quarterback role that he held in each of the past three seasons.

“Jimmy G” looked steady when he took over in relief of the injured Lance in last week’s date with the Seahawks, connecting for 154 passing yards and one touchdown.

However, considering he was reportedly not privy to the Niners playbook just three weeks ago, concerns linger as to how prepared Garoppolo is to face a tough opponent like the Broncos, who have not surrendered a touchdown since the second quarter of their season-opening 17-16 loss in Seattle.

The absence of injured rusher Elijah Mitchell leaves Garoppolo with one less arrow in his quiver of offensive weapons.

However, the 30-year-old veteran showed flashes of the chemistry he previously had with receiver Deebo Samuel last season, connecting on four of five pass attempts last week, with the lone incompletion garnering a defensive pass interference call.

Denver Broncos Betting Outlook

Russell Wilson arrived in Denver over the offseason via a blockbuster trade with the Seahawks. However, the star quarterback has work to do to make his mark on the Broncos offense. Wilson racked up 340 passing yards and one score in his highly anticipated Week 1 return to Seattle.

However, questionable play-calling by rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett ultimately denied Wilson a chance to mount a late, game-winning drive.

Wilson was met with boos in his Denver debut against the Texans last weekend, as the Broncos offense sputtered once again, with Wilson going just 14-for-21 while tossing one pick, and failing to reach the end zone until the fourth quarter.

Despite Wilson’s early struggles, there are many positives. Wilson has developed strong chemistry with receiver Courtland Sutton, who racked up a game-high 122 yards last weekend. The Broncos ground game has also been steady, averaging 126 yards per game through Week 2.

49ers vs Broncos Prediction

With both these teams sporting defenses current ranked among the top three in the NFL and continued questions under center, this contest has the making of a low-scoring affair. At least on paper. More importantly, it represents a clash of quarterbacks with lots to prove.

Accordingly, it is not the time to bet against a bust-out passing performance by one of these star pivots.
