With another big performance from their stars, Colorado took a commanding 2-0 series lead over Arizona. It’s a tight turnaround with Game 3 going Saturday afternoon in Edmonton.

Coyotes vs Avalanche Game 3 Odds

Team Puck Line Over/Under Moneyline at DraftKings
Arizona Coyotes +1.5 (-190) O 5.5 (+108) +148
Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+155) U 5.5 (-132) -175

*Odds taken August 14th.

Colorado was a bigger favorite in Game 2 than they are in Game 3. There may not be fans in the building but Arizona will be the home team and benefit from last change. Will that matter? Likely not. Here’s the case for the Avalanche to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

Coyotes Power Play Has Gone Dry

The Coyotes had 18 less points than the Avalanche in the regular season. A good blueprint to try and combat the obvious talent game would be to take advantage on special teams. When the referees give you a power play, it’s imperative to cash in when you’re the underdog. To this point in the series Arizona is 0-for-6 with the man advantage and it’s a main reason why they trail the series 2-0.

Philipp Grubauer has been great in goal for the Avalanche, stopping 44 of 46 shots on goal for a .957 save percentage in the series. He is a good goalie but he isn’t this good. I’d chalk up the stats to the Coyotes failing to cash in just as much as I would credit him for stellar play. If Arizona can’t put more pressure on Grubauer this series will be over before you know it.

Nathan MacKinnon Is Better Than Advertised

It’s tough to be underrated when everyone already believes you’re one of the most talented forwards in the game. That said, have you seen Nathan MacKinnon in this series? He has a goal, two assists and is +2 but it’s more than just the stats.

The brand of hockey he is currently playing is absolutely remarkable. Shift after shift you notice him on the ice exerting his will on the Coyotes’ defense. He hasn’t been needed to score a clutch goal yet but he’s given me the faith that when called upon, he’s ready for his moment.

Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Nazem Kadri are great players in their own right but there’s no doubt this is MacKinnon’s team. Lucky for the Avalanche and their fans, the Coyotes don’t have anyone close to him in the talent department. He’s averaging 20 minutes of ice time per game and those are quite often spent in the offensive end. Look for him to continue racking up points against the middling Arizona defense.

Two Trends to Follow In Game 3

The Avalanche vs Coyotes betting trends provide a clear road map. Both the Avalanche moneyline and the under are 2-0 in the series so far. Which do I prefer in game 3? Colorado to win straight up, of course. You never know when the MacKinnon breakout performance is coming and I’d be too nervous watching him scoring chance after scoring chance. Take the Avalanche to continue their winning ways and if you’re feeling brash, consider the puck line.

The Pick: Colorado Avalance Moneyline (-175)
