The Boston Bruins (2-2-0) head to the Mile High City to take on the Colorado Avalanche (0-3-0) in a Wednesday Night showdown on October 16, 2024. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 PM Eastern Time at Ball Arena, with national coverage provided by TNT.

The Avalanche enter as slight favorites at -135, while the over/under is set at 6.5 goals. Can Nathan MacKinnon get their first win of the season against the B’s tonight?

Here is our Bruins vs Avalanche prediction for Wednesday Night Hockey.

Avalanche vs Bruins Prediction

Despite their early-season struggles, I’m backing the Avalanche to secure their first win of the season against the Bruins. Colorado has won the possession battle and generated more expected goals at 5-on-5 in all three games, indicating they are due for positive regression.

The Avs have a potent offense led by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, and their power play is clicking at 33.3% (3rd in the NHL). The Avs have also scored at least four goals in four of their past five matchups with the B’s at Ball Arena.

While it’s true the Avs have lost five straight home games, I don’t think this will last for long. Last year, they hit the moneyline in 33 of their 48 home games, good for a 36 ROI. The altitude is always a factor, and the Avs have the upper hand playing their games in the Mile High City.

Boston’s underlying metrics are concerning, as they rank 27th in Corsi For percentage (47.3%) and 25th in expected goals percentage (45.1%) at 5-on-52. The Bruins are also due for regression in the opposite direction, as their league-high 14.1% shooting percentage at 5-on-5 is unsustainable.

While the Avalanche have struggled defensively and in goal, they have the firepower to outscore their problems against a Bruins team that has looked vulnerable early in the season. Expect a high-scoring affair with Colorado coming out on top.

Wednesday Hockey Picks:

Bruins vs Avalanche Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
BOS Bruins +1.5 (-245) +115 Over 6.5 (-106)
COL Avalanche -1.5 (+198) -135 Under 6.5 (-114)

The Avalanche are currently favored to win this one, with the moneyline set at -135. This means that a $135 bet on Colorado would return a profit of $100 if they emerge victorious. On the flip side, the Bruins are underdogs at +115, offering a potential return of $115 on a $100 wager.

Colorado is listed at -1.5 (+198) for those interested in the puck line, while Boston is at +1.5 (-245). A bet on the Avalanche puck line would require them to win by two or more goals, but it would provide a significantly higher payout. The Bruins puck line bet would cash if they either win outright or lose by a single goal.

The total (over/under) for this game is set at 6.5 goals, with the over slightly juiced at -106 and the under at -114. This suggests that oddsmakers believe there’s a slightly higher likelihood of the game seeing seven or more goals scored.
