Boston Bruins NHL Betting Outlook vs Flyers

The Bruins were very impressive in their home opener vs the Stars. The Bruins are one of the few teams whose Stanley Cup odds shortened after opening week in the NHL.

Linus Ullmark signed a four-year $20 million deal this offseason with the Bruins but will make his debut against his former team, Buffalo on October 22nd. Jeremy Swayman started in Boston’s opener and posted a .964 save percentage (SV%), a 1.00 goals against average (GAA), and saved 27-of-28 shots.

Swayman posted a 1-1-0 record against Philly last season, along with a .923 SV% and a 2.53 GAA. When it was announced Swayman was starting, the Bruins lines moved from -120 to -130 in the DraftKings NHL odds.

Boston’s first line of Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak got right back to business in their opener against Dallas. Marchand scored twice, and Pastrnak assisted on his empty net goal. Taylor Hall didn’t find the score sheet but posted a Corsi percentage of 81 percent. If his usage stays high, look for a Hall prop to score when Bruins vs Flyers goes down on Wednesday, October 20th.

The Bruins shut down the Stars offensive attack. Dallas forwards Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn currently have two of the lowest expected goals-per 60-minute rates in the league at 0.09 and 0.05 respectively, thanks to Boston’s stout defensive effort. Philly’s expected goals for per-60 minutes is 2.43, but that’s against the Canucks and Kraken, who have not put on the greatest defensive displays thus far.

Philadelphia Flyers NHL Betting Outlook vs Bruins

The Flyers are 1-0-1, beating the Kraken 6-1 in their most recent matchup, and losing 5-4 in a shootout to the Canucks in their season opener. This team works in offensive bursts.

Against the Canucks, they were trailing 4-2 with less than 3 minutes to go and buried twice in under a minute to tie the game. Against the Kraken, the Flyers scored three goals in a five-minute window within the first period. Their offense comes in spurts and then disappears for good chunks of the game, which can’t happen when you play Boston.

Bruins vs Flyers Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Boston Bruins Jeremy Swayman 1-0-0 .964 1.00
Philadelphia Flyers Martin Jones* 0-0-0 N/A N/A

*Denotes first start of the season

Carter Hart played well in his last start against Seattle, stopping 23 out of 24 shots on net. Hart made an incredible diving save in the first period on Jordan Eberle that certainly swung the tides in the Flyers’ direction. Hart was 0-3-2 with a .849 SV% and a 4.86 GAA in his five starts against Boston last season, so naturally the Flyers are giving Martin Jones his first start of the season. Jones’ record against Boston isn’t much better than Hart’s, as he sports a 0-2-1 record, a 0.839 SV% and a 4.97 GAA in his last three starts against the team.

Joel Farabee leads the team in points with two goals and two assists in two games. Although this team seems to be clicking after a big win, I think Boston will be able to subdue their offensive attack. Plus, I don’t trust the Flyers goaltending at all.

Bruins vs Flyers Pick & Prediction

The NHL betting public is probably going to love Boston at this price, and why wouldn’t you. Boston is -130 on the moneyline in the Bruins vs Flyers odds and +195 on the puckline.

The Flyers have the fourth highest defensive giveaway percentage in the league at 83.33%. That does not bode well when you’re playing against Marchand, Pastrnak, and Hall.

Here are some trends to consider in the Bruins vs Flyers matchup:

  • Flyers are 1-4 after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous matchup
  • Bruins are 4-1 in their last 5 matchups in Philadelphia
  • Bruins are 11-5 in their last 16 games playing on 3 or more days of rest

I think this will be a low-scoring game with Boston dominating puck possession. Take Boston at -130 on the moneyline in the NHL odds at DraftKings for the Flyers vs Bruins matchup.

Pick: Bruins Moneyline (-130)
