  • Washington is 3-3-0 and hosts Montreal in a battle of back-to-back teams on Wednesday
  • The Capitals’ 86.4% penalty kill faces a Montreal power play converting at just 10.0%
  • Read below for my Canadiens vs Capitals prediction, odds and best bets for October 14

The Montreal Canadiens (3-2-1) visit the Washington Capitals (3-3-0) Wednesday night at Capital One Arena. Montreal beat Buffalo 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday. Washington lost 4-2 at Carolina. Both teams are playing the second night of a back-to-back.

Jakub Dobes gets the start in net for Montreal. Charlie Lindgren starts for Washington. Nick Suzuki (3 goals, 5 assists) and Cole Caufield (3 goals, 24 shots) lead the Canadiens’ attack, while Ryan Leonard (2 goals, 4 assists) and Jakob Chychrun (1 goal, 2 assists, 19 shots) have been productive for the Capitals.

Puck drop is at 7:30 pm ET. Here are my Canadiens vs Capitals prediction, odds and best bets.

Washington to win
53%

My Canadiens vs Capitals prediction is on Washington at home. Both teams played Tuesday, so fatigue is a wash. The difference is the special teams matchup. Washington’s penalty kill is operating at 86.4% (19-for-22), while Montreal’s power play has converted just 2 of 20 opportunities (10.0%). That gap limits Montreal’s ability to generate extra scoring chances.

Washington has also been tighter defensively overall, allowing 18 goals through six games compared to Montreal’s 22. The Capitals are generating 19 goals of their own (3.17 per game), and their depth gives them an edge at even strength against a Canadiens team dealing with injuries up front. At 53¢ on Kalshi, Washington is a slight favorite, and the home ice plus the special teams edge makes them the right side. Montreal is 49¢. The Canadiens vs Capitals odds have Washington as a slight home favorite at -115 on the moneyline. Montreal is -105. The total is set at 6.5 with the under at -105 and the over juiced to -115. Check the latest lines at the NHL odds page.

Canadiens vs Capitals Best Bets

  • Under 6.5 Goals (-105 at BetMGM)

My Canadiens vs Capitals best bet is the under. The special teams matchup suppresses expected goals in both directions. Montreal’s power play is at 10.0% (2-for-20) and Washington’s is at 13.3% (2-for-15). Neither team is converting with the man advantage at a rate that inflates totals.

Washington’s penalty kill at 86.4% is the strongest unit on the ice tonight and should handle Montreal’s struggling power play comfortably. With both teams playing on back-to-back nights, I expect a more cautious game rather than wide-open scoring. At -105, the under 6.5 is a fair price given how these two are playing on special teams.

2/20 (10.0%)Power Play2/15 (13.3%)

The Canadiens vs Capitals stats show Washington with the edge on both sides of the puck. The Capitals have scored 19 goals and allowed 18 through six games, while Montreal has been outscored 22-17. Washington’s penalty kill at 86.4% is the key number tonight, especially against a Montreal power play that has converted just twice in 20 attempts.

Cole Caufield has been Montreal’s most dangerous shooter with 24 shots in six games (4.0 per game) and 17 over his last three alone. Chychrun has 19 shots from the point for Washington. Both players will drive the shot volume, but the special teams gap favors the Capitals keeping this game closer to the under.

Canadiens vs Capitals Goalies and Game Info

Jakub Dobes starts for Montreal. Charlie Lindgren starts for Washington. Lindgren benefits from a more structured defensive setup in front of him, while Dobes will need to be sharp against a Capitals team generating 3.17 goals per game.

Puck drop for the Canadiens vs Capitals game is at 7:30 pm ET from Capital One Arena in Washington.
