Isles Rally To Win Game 6

The Islanders can advance to the Stanley Cup Final on Friday after mounting an impressive comeback to win Game 6. The Isles were down 2-0 in the second period, but rallied with goals from Jordan Eberle and Scott Mayfield to force overtime. Beauvillier scored off a turnover in the extra frame to even the series 3-3.

New York showed great resilience in Game 6 and rallied behind the passionate fans at Nassau Coliseum. Top center Mathew Barzal had a superstar performance, creating numerous chances with his elite skating and assisting Mayfield on the tying goal. Goalie Semyon Varlamov shut the door in the third period, finishing with 22 saves on the night.

Kucherov Injured

The big storyline entering Game 7 is the health status of Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov. The Russian superstar sustained an undisclosed injury in the first period of Game 6, after taking a cross-check to the back from Mayfield. Kucherov left the game and didn’t return. His status for Game 7 is uncertain.

There’s no downplaying the impact this injury has on betting Game 7. Kucherov leads the entire postseason in scoring with 27 points (five goals) in 17 games. He forms a dynamic duo with Brayden Point on the top line and plays a crucial role on the Bolts’ electric power play. It’s not surprising Tampa Bay went 0-for-2 with the man advantage Wednesday in Kucherov’s absence.

Trendspotting

There are some important trends to keep in mind when betting Game 7 between the Lightning and Islanders. Brayden Point is red-hot and has scored in nine straight games. He’s available at +106 to score a goal in Game 7 and tie Reggie Leach for the longest goal-scoring streak in NHL postseason history.

The Lightning are 13-0 in their last 13 playoff games following a loss. They’ve not lost consecutive postseason games since 2019. The Bolts are tremendous at bouncing back and not a team you want to bet against following a defeat. Two of Vasilevskiy’s three shutouts this postseason have come following a loss.

The Islanders are 4-5-0 all-time in Game 7’s, while the Lightning are 5-3-0. The Isles’ last Game 7 was a victory over the Flyers in Round 2 of the 2020 playoffs, while the Bolts most recent Game 7 appearance was a loss to the Capitals in the 2018 Eastern Conference Final.

Game 7 Best Bet

The Kucherov injury casts a shadow of doubt over this all-important Game 7. One player alone shouldn’t determine the outcome of the game, but it’s something bettors need to consider given Kucherov’s skill-set. The positive for the Lightning is that they played 56 games during the regular season without Kucherov and managed just fine (36-17-3).

I’d be leaning the Isles in Game 7 if it were being played at the electric building that is Nassau Coliseum. The Lightning are 5-1-2 at Amalie Arena this postseason and have outchanced the Isles in four of the six games thus far. It’s also impossible ignore their record following a loss.

Whether Kucherov plays or not, it’s the Lightning’s goaltending and depth that should punch their ticket to the Final. Vasi owns the best save percentage in the playoffs, and the Bolts have the highest-scoring offense. Bet on Tampa bouncing back yet again and eliminating the Isles for the second straight year.

Pick: Lightning ML (-175)
