Dallas Favored in Opening WCF Odds

Oddsmakers are siding with the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final odds. The Stars appear to be a team of destiny after dethroning the two most recent Stanley Cup Champions in the opening two rounds.

The Oilers enter the Western Conference Final as betting underdogs despite featuring the NHL’s best player in Connor McDavid. The Oilers were heavily favored over the Canucks in Round 2, but required the full seven games to punch their ticket to the Final.

It isn’t hard to see why the experts in Las Vegas like Dallas to advance to the Cup Final. The Stars just took down a Colorado Avalanche team that is built similarly to this Oilers squad. Dallas’ shutdown defense, led by Miro Heiskanen, held Nathan MacKinnon pointless in three of the six games.

Oddsmakers are clearly projecting this Stars’ shutdown defense to give Connor McDavid similar treatment. The Oilers’ phenom, who is searching for his first Stanley Cup, was held to just one assist in three regular-season meetings.

The Stars lead all remaining playoff teams with a 54.51 xGF% at five-on-five, indicating they are winning the possession battle. However, the Oilers have the special teams’ edge, with their top-ranked power play (36.8%) facing the Stars’ 11th-ranked penalty kill (69.2%).

Series Schedule

The Western Conference Final gets underway on Thursday, May 23rd, with TNT broadcasting every game of the action. Game 1 will take place at American Airlines Center, as the Stars hold home-ice advantage.

The Oilers vs Stars series schedule shows no more than one off-day throughout the entire schedule. This likely favors Dallas, who eliminated the Avalanche on Friday (May. 17). The Stars are the more rested squad and will have had nearly a week off between Round 2 and the Conference Final.

Oilers vs Stars H2H History

In the 2023-24 NHL regular season, the Oilers and Stars renewed their rivalry with three matchups. Dallas went 2-0-1 in those matchups, improving their record against Edmonton 4-1-1 over the past two seasons.

December 22, 2022 Dallas Oilers win 6-3
March 17, 2023 Edmonton Stars win 4-1

February 17, 2024 Dallas Oilers win 4-3 (OT)
April 4, 2024 Dallas Stars win 5-0

During the 2024 regular season, the Stars drew first blood on November 2nd, 2023, defeating the Oilers 4-3 in a hard-fought game at American Airlines Center. Dallas forward Roope Hintz led the way with two goals and an assist.

But the Oilers would get their revenge on February 17th, 2024 in a thrilling overtime victory at Rogers Place. Connor McDavid played the hero, scoring the game-winner to lift Edmonton to a 4-3 win. The Oilers’ captain was brilliant all night, racking up three points.

The rubber match came on April 3rd, 2024 in Dallas. This time, it was all Stars from start to finish as they cruised to a dominant 5-0 shutout. Jake Oettinger stood tall in net, stopping all 29 shots he faced. Jason Robertson paced the Dallas offense with a goal and two assists.

While the Stars took the 2023-24 season series 2-1, the Oilers still hold the all-time edge with a 71-101-15-5 record against Dallas/Minnesota. Edmonton has eliminated the Stars in two playoff series, most recently in the 1997 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

But Dallas has gotten the better of the matchup in recent decades. The Stars have won six of the last seven playoff series against the Oilers dating back to 1991. That includes a dominant sweep in the 1999 first round.

Early Oilers vs Stars Prediction

The Oilers vs Stars Western Conference Final showdown is a classic case of offense vs. defense. The Oilers boast one of the NHL’s most explosive offensive attacks, while the Stars feature one of the league’s most elite defenses. The latter usually prevails in these scenarios, although there have been exceptions.

1-2-0 Reg. Season Head-To-Head 2-0-1
8-4-0 Playoff Record 8-5-0
3.93 (1st) Goals For/GP 2.92 (7th)

90.6% (1st) Penalty Kill 69.2% (11th)
49.11% (9th) Corsi Percentage 49.39% (8th)

The Stars will greatly benefit from this extended break between playoff series. Star forward Roope Hintz, who is dealing with an upper-body injury, will have extra time to heal. Forwards Tyler Seguin and Sam Steel are also dealing with nagging injuries. All three players skated on Monday and are day-to-day.

We expect this Stars’ defense to frustrate the Oilers’ offense but it’s the goaltending edge that makes us the most confident in our Stars vs Oilers series prediction. Jake Oettinger has allowed three goals or fewer in 10 of 13 playoff stars, while Stuart Skinner lost the Oilers’ crease at one point in Round 2 and boasts a lackluster .882 playoff sv%.
