For the first stop on their California road trip, the Penguins pay the lowly Anaheim Ducks a visit on Friday, February 10th from the Honda Center. Faceoff for this affair goes at 10:00 pm ET on the West Coast and can be seen on Bally Sports West or AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh.

In their first game back from the all-star break, the Pens squeaked out a 2-1 overtime win over the Avalanche. Against a Ducks team that has the third-worst record in the league, Pittsburgh have been made -240 moneyline favorites in the NHL odds.

The injury bug has plagued the Penguins all year, but several players have returned to the ice for them over the last few weeks, while the Ducks may be down a key contributor. For all the rest of the Penguins vs Ducks odds, read on below.

Penguins Players Returning From Infirmary

It appears as though the all-star break has done wonders for the Penguins players who were laid up with injuries. Their top two defensemen, Kris Letang and Jeff Petry, have combined to play just 10 games in this calendar year, but both are back logging heavy minutes.

In addition, the Penguins activated forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Josh Archibald from injured reserve in the Pens 2-1 win over Colorado, and their number one netminder, Tristan Jarry, had a full practice Thursday and isn’t too far behind.

Currently holding the last Wild Card playoff spot in the East, the return of the cavalry should fuel the aging Pens’ run up the standings as they look to climb their way up the table in the Stanley Cup odds.

Particularly inspiring of late has been the play of Letang. While no longer a threat in the Norris Trophy odds, the Penguins’ blueline anchor had a difficult start to 2023. Not only was he hurt, but his father passed away. In four games since the veteran has come back, he’s scored three goals, including two overtime game-winners.

Are Ducks Losing Hard for Bedard?

With a potential generational talent available for the upcoming NHL Draft, the Ducks appear to have as good a chance as any team to nab the first overall pick. Only the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks currently have worse records, with Connor Bedard lingering as the potential prize for the bottom feeding teams in the league.

It might surprise you to hear that Anaheim is actually 5-1-1 in its last seven outings. Their last three games have all needed to go beyond regulation to be settled. The bad news for them is that second-leading scorer, Troy Terry, missed the last game and will likely sit out this one as well with an upper-body injury.

In head-to-head matchups against the Penguins, the Ducks have limited success of late, losing five of the last six. However, they have been pretty good at covering the puck line in the NHL odds in those meetings, keeping within at least a goal four times. Anaheim is also 6-1 against the puck line spread in their last seven contests overall.

Penguins vs Ducks Pick and Prediction

At this point of the year, Pittsburgh can’t afford to drop points against inferior competition. In contrast, you have to think, the Anaheim brass wouldn’t mind staying where they are in the standings or even falling a spot or two.

With a couple of young studs up front already in Trevor Zegras and Calder trophy odds contender, Mason McTavish, SoCal could be home to the most entertaining team in hockey next year, if they won the lottery and nabbed Bedard.

For now though, we can’t ignore their recent form. They’re showing pride in their performances recently. It’s hard to see them finding a way to win, so our prediction is to take the safe route here and pick Anaheim to keep it close on the puck line.
