The Pittsburgh Penguins wrap up a California back-to-back Sunday night at Honda Center. They’re coming off a 5-2 win over the Kings in LA on Saturday, with Sidney Crosby and Tommy Novak scoring two goals each.
Anaheim (9-7-1) came back from three goals down to beat Calgary 5-3 on Friday. That gave the Ducks a fourth straight win and a day to rest before the Penguins came to town.
The Penguins and Ducks face off at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET in Anaheim.
Penguins vs Ducks Prediction
- Pick: Anaheim Ducks to win
Anaheim’s offense is rolling right now. The Ducks have scored at least five goals in seven straight games, and Cutter Gauthier has ten snipes over his last five.
Pittsburgh has a short trip from Los Angeles but little time to turn around after Saturday’s win. Anaheim had Saturday off after coming home from Calgary.
The Penguins just snapped a seven-game road skid. To make it two straight wins away from home, they’ll have to slow down a team that scored five against Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary in the space of four nights. My Penguins vs Ducks pick is Anaheim to win.
Penguins vs Ducks Odds
Kalshi game-winner prices as of 4:42 a.m. ET Sunday.
Kalshi has the Penguins vs Ducks odds close to even. The Ducks’ 52¢ YES price works out to about a 52% implied chance, while Pittsburgh’s 47¢ comes in at roughly 47%.
Crosby and Novak Give Pittsburgh a Way Through
Pittsburgh’s best chance in Anaheim comes at five-on-five. The Penguins take 52.8% of the shot attempts in their games and lead the Ducks in shots on goal, 26.9 per game to 24.9. They should get their share of offensive-zone shifts even with the quick turnaround. The question is what happens to the first shot.
Tommy Novak scored both of his goals in Los Angeles from around the crease. On the second, Ben Kindel got the initial shot through and Novak beat the Kings to the rebound. Evgeni Malkin had three assists, and Sidney Crosby got a piece of his one-timer for the goal that put Pittsburgh up 4-2. That’s the traffic I’d want in front of Anaheim’s net again tonight.
The Ducks have a .860 team save percentage and kill just 73.5% of their penalties. Pittsburgh doesn’t need to match Anaheim’s finishing touch from distance if it can draw penalties and win those second pucks. The Pens also have an 81.4% penalty kill, so Anaheim may get fewer clean looks than it did on its seven power plays in Edmonton on Thursday.
How Cutter Gauthier Changes the Ducks’ Attack
Gauthier’s winner in Calgary is the chance Pittsburgh has to take away. Mikael Granlund found him in the right circle, and the puck was off Gauthier’s stick before Dustin Wolf could get across. There was 1:34 left in a tie game. Sit on that passing lane and the Ducks still have Leo Carlsson, who had a goal and an assist, and Beckett Sennecke, who set up two.
Anaheim got its goals a different way the night before. Sennecke scored twice in Edmonton, and defenseman Pavel Mintyukov added two more. The Ducks are averaging 3.76 goals per game (fourth best) despite taking fewer shots than Pittsburgh. I like their chances to win a one-goal game because the Penguins need to account for the point shot as well as Gauthier in the circle.
Penguins vs Ducks Stats & Betting Splits
The Penguins have the edge in two areas. Their penalty kill is better, and they control more of the play at even strength with a 52.8% Corsi For rate, compared to Anaheim’s 48.6%.
Sportradar’s betting splits show most bettors backing Anaheim in the NHL public betting trends. Anaheim has 82.06% of moneyline tickets and 86.61% of the handle.
The Over is just as popular. It’s drawing 84.7% of tickets and 85.3% of the money on the total.
