The Detroit Red Wings head west to face the Edmonton Oilers Monday night at Rogers Place. Edmonton has piled up wins to start the season behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, while Detroit is still searching for a steady run of results.
Special teams could swing this one in a hurry. The Oilers’ power play has been lethal through eleven games, and Detroit’s penalty kill has struggled to keep pucks out. Both teams also bring big questions between the pipes, with John Gibson and Tristan Jarry potentially starting.
Keep reading for my Red Wings vs Oilers prediction and my best bets for Monday’s game.
Red Wings vs Oilers Prediction
- Over 6.5 goals (53¢ on Polymarket)
My Red Wings vs Oilers prediction is on the Over 6.5, and the Edmonton offense carries most of the load. The Oilers are scoring 4.36 goals per game, yet they’re also allowing 3.55 per night. That combination makes it tough to see this staying under seven goals.
Detroit isn’t the same kind of scoring threat, averaging 2.55 goals per game. But the Red Wings are allowing 2.91 per game, and their penalty kill is stopping just 65.8% of chances. Against an Oilers power play running at 35.1%, a couple of trips to the box could open this up fast.
Edmonton’s special teams aren’t airtight either, with a 70% penalty kill of its own. Detroit’s power play sits at 21.1%, so the Red Wings should get chances to chip in. Buying the Over at 53¢ implies roughly a 53% chance, and I like this total to clear more often than that.
Red Wings vs Oilers Starting Goalies
Neither team has confirmed its starter for Monday, so the Red Wings vs Oilers starting goalies remain a question mark. Edmonton has split the work, with Tristan Jarry making four starts and Devon Levi getting seven. Jarry owns a 3.73 GAA and .861 save percentage.
John Gibson has carried Detroit’s crease with eight starts, posting a 3.44 GAA and .867 save percentage. Daniil Tarasov has been sharper in three starts at 1.40 and .940, while Michal Postava has one relief appearance and no starts, sitting at 3.04 and .875.
Tarasov’s numbers are the outlier, and a start from him would cool my confidence a bit. Still, Jarry, Gibson and Postava are all sitting under an .880 save percentage, so I’m comfortable leaning on the Over with this much uncertainty in both creases.
Red Wings vs Oilers Best Bets
- Leon Draisaitl Over 3.5 Shots on Goal (-105 at theScore Bet)
My second Red Wings vs Oilers best bet comes from the NHL Player Props market and stays with Edmonton’s attack. Leon Draisaitl has 43 shots on goal through eleven games, which works out to about 3.9 per game. He’s finishing those looks too, with twelve snipes and 23 points, including six power-play goals.
Draisaitl’s power-play role matters against a Detroit penalty kill that’s struggled all season, since more time with the man advantage means more looks. At -105, the break-even rate is about 51.2%, and his shot volume gives me a concrete reason to back four or more attempts on target.
McDavid has 33 points and Evan Bouchard has added 21 from the blueline, so Detroit can’t key on one threat.
Red Wings vs Oilers Odds
Prices via Polymarket. Compare prediction market apps for available NHL markets.
Polymarket prices the Oilers at 62¢ to win, roughly a 62% implied chance, while a Red Wings contract costs 39¢. Detroit +1.5 trades at 60¢, while Edmonton -1.5 sits at 41¢, or about a 41% shot to win by two or more.
The total is close to a coin flip, with the Over at 53¢ and the Under at 49¢. I’m siding with the Over in my Red Wings vs Oilers prediction, since both teams have defensive holes that a near-even price doesn’t fully account for.
