Colorado Avalanche’s Betting Value as Stanley Cup Favorites

Colorado remains the favorite in the updated Stanley Cup odds for December. The Avs had an underwhelming start to the 2021-22 season, but they’re starting to show why they were the heavy preseason Cup favorite. Jared Bednar’s team has won four straight games, scoring 24 goals in that span.

Colorado at +550 is pretty solid value considering they were +475 entering opening night. Although superstar Nathan MacKinnon has faded significantly in the Hart Trophy odds, other players have stepped up. Cale Makar is the favorite in the Norris Trophy odds, while Andre Burakovsky has potted 12 goals.

Colorado will be hungry this postseason after failing to make it past the second round in three straight years. You also have to take injuries into the equation, as the Avs are currently without Nazem Kadri, Gabriel Landeskog, and Bowen Byram. When fully healthy, it’s hard to find a more talented NHL roster.

Wild Surging in Updated Stanley Cup Odds

The Minnesota Wild have been the biggest risers in the updated Stanley Cup odds for December, improving from +1800 to +1100 at DraftKings Sportsbook over the past month. The Wild have won eight of their past 10 games to take the reigns in the Central Division with 39 points in 28 games.

Advanced stats will tell you the Wild are due for some regression, as they rank middle-of-the-pack in both Corsi and Fenwick. Goalie Cam Talbot has played a huge role in their success, posting a .917 save percentage in 21 starts. Kirill Kaprizov, however, is the only player averaging over a point per game.

Minnesota is the second-favorite to win the Central in the NHL Divisional odds, but it’s best to tread lightly. Not only is Colorado a threat, but Vegas is also rising in the West. They’ve taken five of the past seven meetings with Minnesota and will get Jack Eichel back from injury before playoffs.

Islanders Fading in All NHL Odds This December

While Minnesota is trending up in the updated Stanley Cup odds for December, the New York Islanders are heading in the opposite direction. Barry Trotz’s team has faded from +2200 to +6000 in the Cup odds over the past month. The Isles had a 10-game losing streak in November that tanked their odds.

New York is an interesting team to wager on in the NHL odds right now. They have an elite defense, but their offense is one of the worst in the NHL. It appears to be trending in the right direction, however, scoring at least four goals in three straight games. Mat Barzal has a six-game point streak.

New York is currently available at +390 in the odds to make the NHL Playoffs. The Isles are 20 points out of third place in the Metro, but they have at least three games in hand on everyone. What’s also interesting is that Strength of Schedule rankings suggest the Isles have played the fourth-hardest schedule to date.

New York has a tendency of squeaking into the playoffs, as they finished 4th and 5th respectively in their division the past two years. This is close to the team that reach the Eastern Conference Final last season, so there’s value in betting them to make the playoffs and sprinkling as a Stanley Cup longshot at their current odds.
