  • The latest odds indicate that Congress will block tariffs on Mexico
  • Trump’s “Tariff War” could put up to 400,000 US jobs in jeopardy
  • Republicans are trying to maintain a clam veneer, but the cracks are beginning to show

Republicans have put up with and justified almost everything US President Donald Trump has said or done during his administration. The Tweets calling for boycotts of some of America’s communications giants, staring directly into the sun during an eclipse, love-affairs with dictators and oligarchs… The list goes on and on, and the GOP will have their hand on his sloped shoulders for almost everything.

However, the potential tariffs on Mexico are another story. Trump’s tariffs on China didn’t even make the GOP raise a poorly manicured eyebrow, but massive increases on America’s largest trading partner certainly did. First, Trump doesn’t understand tariffs and his promise to raise it every month by 5% until it hits 25% could kill about 400,000 jobs according to CNN.

The potential impact on American industrial workers could be immeasurable. These are the manufacturing jobs and the people in these jobs are likely to be the same voters who put Trump into power. The GOP can’t afford to have any on-the-fencers right now. It should come as little surprise then that the latest odds indicate Congress will block tariffs on Mexico.

The Tariff Toddler

Tariffs are Trump’s only weapon these days and he’s wielding them like a toddler with a plastic lightsaber. While that was fine for China, Canada,  and whomever else, this is the one that scares the pocket squares out of the GOP.  If these tariffs go into effect on Monday, Texas alone could see a loss of over 150,000 jobs. The GOP likes the immigration angle of the deal but the bottom line is they are scared to go against Trump because it will show that the party is riffing. What they want is a clean, non-threatening deal.

Tariffs are Trump’s only weapon these days and he’s wielding them like a toddler with a plastic lightsaber.

If they can’t reach a deal, they will mobilize to override his request and then we’re back in executive order territory, Disarray cannot occur, not on Mitch McConnell pocket watch! This will be blocked in Congress. Not to worry it’s just a little gas on a raging dumpster fire.

Letting It Go… For Now

In the words of the lady from Frozen, “Let it go, let it go, turn away and slam the door.” I would love to see Trump’s tax returns and we’ve had a glimpse into the taxes of a man who lost one billion dollars in a decade. We know what’s in there, and it’s trash. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has already denied Congress the actual tax returns so the Dems would have to fight them on this.

Trump’s tax returns, if released, will be years down the road. The Democratic party is focused on the issues they face heading into 2020. Between Elizabeth Warren flinging a Shakespearean volume of the policy all over the place, old white men battling it out, and 20ish candidates, no one knows or cares about, Nancy Pelosi has her hands full.

In April, Pelosi was giddy as snatching those tax returns. “Show us the Mueller report, show us the tax returns, and we are not walking away just because you say no the first time around,” Pelosi said.

Then they got the Mueller report and there is too much “there-there” to even start in on the tax returns. Oh, they’ll get to Trump’s returns alright, but it’s not a bet on if, it’s a bet on when.
