Formula 1 rolls into Barcelona this Sunday, June 1st, with the Spanish Grand Prix.

The green flag drops just after 9:00 am ET, with live coverage via ESPN. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a 2.894-mile race track. This course has 14 turns and honestly is built for serious speed on the long straightaway. It is a course that McLaren has the potential to dominate at. Still, expect drivers like Max Verstappen and even Lewis Hamilton to try and get creative in the ninth round of the 2025 championship.

Spanish Grand Prix Predictions

People should expect partly sunny weather during the race. Temperatures close to 80 degrees should greet racers early in the afternoon. This is one of the faster courses on the F1 circuit, and that should help the McLaren cars again.

One major flag with Max Verstappen is again the lack of speed when it counts. Then again, the Verstappen run seems to be at an end. Unless Red Bull can turn things around quickly, the McLaren’s are likely to finish 1-2 in the final standings while easily winning the Constructor’s Championship.

The question becomes can Verstappen get to the first turn or first lap in a position to pull off taking the lead? Normally, this would be a far greater possibility. However, that has been more hit-and-miss. Other than the Oscar Piastri lapse, the McLaren cars have been able to fend off the four-time defending champion. Verstappen has won the Spanish Grand Prix three times in a row though.

Last week, Charles Leclerc just never recovered after some early mistakes. He did finish second but did not truly come close to a win. The difference this week is McLaren is that extra tenths faster per lap compared to the Red Bull. On a faster track like Barcelona, that translates into late-run runaways. Unless there is a mishap, this race feels like a battle between Norris and Piastri.

With Spain, Verstappen is a relative long shot by his standards at +750. Never say never when it comes to Formula 1. Norris and Piastri can hold off Verstappen and even Russell or Hamilton if there are no mental mistakes. Take Norris to overtake Piastri at some point on Sunday.

I still think Piastri gets passed early and it may be by Norris, not Verstappen. For those wondering, the number is the same whether it is one or five laps. Verstappen’s number actually drops from +400 after one lap to +370. That could be something to keep an eye on. However, Norris may have a little more to hold off the Red Bull.

Spanish GP: Retirements?

With 68 laps and the lack of a retirement over the past two years, at least one feels like it is due. Alpine and Racing Bulls are the most likely bets here. Ferrari is tempting due to previous engine issues but that seems less likely this time around.
