Sebastian Vettel has captured the checkered flag at the Bahrain Grand Prix in each of the past two years, and on four occasions since making his debut at Sakhir in 2008.

But after struggling to a fourth-place finish with an underperforming ride at the Australian Grand Prix, the four-time Formula 1 champion travels to the Persian Gulf lagging behind the favorites on the Bahrain Grand Prix odds, pegged as a +275 bet in sportsbooks.

The Bahrain GP will take place Sunday, March 31 at 11:10am ET.

Ferrari Looking for Answers Following  Disappointment in Melbourne

Ferrari entered the season looking poised to challenge Mercedes’ five-year run of dominance atop the Formula 1 Constructor Standings, after leading the pack during pre-season testing.

That success did not extend to Melbourne, where Mercedes led the way in qualifying with defending F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas seizing the front row.

Things got worse for Vettel and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc on race day. Vettel steadily lost ground to his Mercedes rivals, finishing a distant 57 seconds behind Bottas, and just 1.1 seconds ahead of fifth-place Leclerc.

Ferrari’s vaunted SF90 is expected to better handle some of the cornering issues that limited the team in Australia, but Vettel and Leclerc still face an enormous challenge in extending the team’s record of six all-time wins in the desert.

Bottas Riding High After Ending Drought in Australia

Bottas arrives in Bahrain on a high following his first win on the Formula 1 circuit since 2017, and currently edges out Vettel as a +250 wager on the Bahrain Grand Prix odds.

Bottas has been under pressure to return to the form that earned him three wins in his Mercedes debut in 2017, following a disappointing fifth-place finish on last season’s Formula 1 Drivers Championship standings.

The 29-year-old Finn rose to the occasion in Melbourne, finishing just 0.1 seconds back of Hamilton in qualifying, and never looked back after getting past the defending champion in Turn 1, powering to an impressive victory to pay out on long +900 odds.

Bottas became the first Mercedes driver to outpace Hamilton in Melbourne since Nico Rosberg opened the 2016 season with wins in Australia and Bahrain

With the win, Bottas became the first Mercedes driver to outpace Hamilton in Melbourne since Nico Rosberg opened the 2016 season with wins in Australia and Bahrain, paving his way to a Formula 1 title.

The eight-year F1 veteran has also enjoyed some success in Bahrain, posting the first of seven second-place finishes on the season a year ago, following a run to third place in 2017.

He has been rewarded for his early-season success at the sportsbooks, closing the gap on Hamilton and Vettel as a +600 bet on the odds to win this year’s F1 Drivers Championship.

Recent Steady Results Make Verstappen Worth a Look

Max Verstappen could also be worth a look as an intriguing +800 wager on the Bahrain Grand Prix odds after a third-place finish in Melbourne.

The Red Bull driver has produced steady results since late last season, reaching the podium in each of his past six races, and capitalized on a strong performance in qualifying to earn the win in Mexico.

Hamilton Still the Man to Beat

However, Hamilton remains the man to beat in Bahrain, which is reflected on the race odds, where he is perched as a short +150 favorite.

The five-time Formula 1 champion powered to a comfortable second-place finish in Melbourne, while closely trailing Vettel as a +200 second favorite. He has reached the podium in Bahrain in each of the past five years, including consecutive wins in 2014 and 2015.
