In midst of a worldwide pandemic, Bayern Munich put the finishing touches on one of the greatest seasons in their storied history last August, when Kingsley Coman scored the only goal against Paris St. Germain to wrap up the club’s second continental treble in seven years.

In Egypt, Cairo’s Al Ahly were equally as dominant as the Bavarian giants, winning a fifth straight league title, tacking on the Egypt Cup before adding a record ninth CAF Champions League crown and punching their ticket to the Club World Cup.

The pair of soccer giants will lock horns for the first time in a competitive game on Monday, February 8, with the Germans as heavily favored as they have been in a long time, sitting at -835 to win the match.

Munich Motivated By History

Having swept all before them, both at home and abroad, in wrapping up another treble, Bayern Munich appear as peerless as any team for some time.

Indeed, the most appropriate comparison might well be Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team of 2009, which won a record six trophies in all that year. And that is the mark that Bayern are currently taking aim at, looking to add the Club World Cup trophy to the Bundesliga, German Cup, DFL Supercup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Supercup.

The Bavarian club fell one trophy short the last time they competed in this tournament, having lost the DFL Supercup, so will be looking to go one better and take their place alongside Barca in the history books.

Al Ahly Have Nothing To Lose

Having helped Bayern Munich to a hat trick of European Cups before going on to manage Ah Ahly, former German midfielder Rainer Zobel says that the Egyptian side have “slim” chances of upsetting his old club.

He says that Al Ahly’s only real chance will be if Bayern overlook the African minnows, with their thoughts already distracted by Thursday’s World Club Cup final against either Brazil’s Palmeiras or Mexico’s Tigres UNAM. The other big factor in the game will be Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, Zobel adds, and with 24 goals in 19 appearances so far in the Bundesliga, the FIFA men’s player of the year is in the form of his life.

When Lewandowski, who is playing in his first World Club Cup, is in the form of his life like he is, few opponents stand much of a chance.

Form Favors The Germans

Despite making hard work of a 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Friday, which included Lewandowski missing a penalty, Bayern did wrap up the victory, their fifth straight in the Bundesliga. Consequently, Munich sits seven points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the German league, with a 10th straight crown surely within their sights.

Although they are unbeaten in the new season, Al Ahly is actually sitting second in the Egyptian Premier League, although they do have a game in hand over first-place Zamalek, which is two points in front. Al Ahly have also drawn three of their last six games in the league – with all three featuring goalless scorelines – and got a solitary goal from Hussein El Shahat to get by Al-Duhail in the second round of the Club World Cup.

Expect Goals

Bayern have been very hit or miss when it comes to finding the back of the net. But in nine games already this season, Bayern have scored four or more goal on nine occasions in either the Bundesliga or Champions League, and with Lewandowski ably abetted by the likes of Thomas Mueller and Serge Gnabry at the offensive end of the pitch, it could be a long day for Al Ahly.
