Liverpool Red-Hot on the Road

Liverpool FC will be looking to maintain their recent impressive performance on the road when they continue their UCL group stage schedule on Tuesday. The Reds are coming off a crushing 5-0 victory over Watford FC in Premier League action this past weekend, and have now potted 22 total goals while racking up a 5-1-0 win-draw-loss record in six away contests across all competitions so far this season.

That run includes a lopsided 5-1 victory over FC Porto in their last group stage contest in late September, which also leaves the club in sole position of top spot on the Group B table with six points through two outings. Liverpool’s hot start has helped to bolster their position in the odds to win this season’s UEFA Champions League, where they lag just shy of the favorites at +900.

However, the club has work to do to flip the script on a shaky track record against Atletico Madrid, capped by their stunning 4-2 aggregate loss to the Colchoneros in the Round of 16 at this tournament two seasons ago.

Liverpool’s recent offensive exploits add value to the long +105 odds of the total going OVER 2.5 in Tuesday’s contest. That value is further enhanced by the Reds’ tendency to give up goals in bunches. While the club has managed to keep clean sheets on six occasions so far this season, they have also surrendered multiple goals three times, including last month’s 3-2 comeback win over AC Milan in tournament play.

Atletico Turning the Corner on Recent Home Struggles

Despite enjoying a lengthy 17-day layoff during the recent international break, Atletico Madrid should still be riding high from their recent decisive win over Barcelona when they hit the pitch on Tuesday as sizeable +220 underdogs. The 2-0 victory over Barca has established the club’s first two-match win streak in all competitions since August, and also put the brakes on a three-match winless slide on home turf, during which Atletico scored just two total goals.

Indeed, unlike Liverpool, scoring has come at a premium for Atletico, who have scored just 13 total goals through their first 10 outings in all competitions. The upside for the club is a stingy defense that has blanked opponents in four of five home contests so far this season.

While the Atletico attack has struggled to find the back of the net at times this season, they have received steady production from veteran Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan veteran has potted four total goals over his past four club appearances, making him the team’s leading goalscorer. Suarez also tallied the match-winner in Atletico’s 2-1 victory over AC Milan in their last UCL outing and leads all players as a +160 wager to score at anytime during Tuesday’s contest.

The Picks: Liverpool -130; OVER 2.5 (+105)
