Tough Campaign for Barca

It has been little short of a disastrous season for Barca, who continues to struggle despite the arrival of Xavi in the managerial hot seat. The Barcelona legend was brought in to replace the sacked Ronald Koeman but has found the problems at the club run deep, both on and off the pitch.

Despite Xavi welcoming back some big names at the weekend, after the Barca camp had been hit been a COVID-19 outbreak, they were still unable to beat Granada; a result that epitomized their struggles this season. It was an afternoon that began well for Barcelona when Dutch midfielder Luuk de Jong gave them a lead but started to go wrong when teenager Gavi was sent off after collecting two bookings. In the end, they succumbed to a late equalizer from Antonio Puertas and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Super Cup Record Breakers

As things stand, and as a result of games like the one in Granada, Barca is down in sixth place, albeit just a single point adrift of the top four. Crucially, however, they are 17 points adrift of the leaders, Real Madrid and so any chance of a late charge to the La Liga title has long gone and so chances of winning silverware, like the Spanish Super Cup, will be taken very seriously.

This is a competition Barca have had great success in – winning it a record 13 times – and, in their favor this time around, they come into this game on a run of six unbeaten across all competitions.

Real Flying High

While Barca has struggled, Real Madrid has thrived and a fine 4-1 win over Valencia at the weekend saw them open up a five-point lead at the top of La Liga. Only Sevilla is now left as a realistic title challenger and while Madrid has played a game more, that five-point lead plus a vastly superior goal difference is looking ominous.

The win over 10th- placed Valencia in front of their own fans was achieved with ease and this Real team is starting to display a familiar swagger; the sign of a side that is starting to fire on all cylinders. Two goals from Karim Benzema – the first of which took him to 300 goals for Los Blancos – and a brace from Vinícius Jr. were enough for an easy win and made for the perfect Super Cup preparation.

Five El Clasico Wins for Los Blancos?

Real Madrid is only just behind Barca in the Super Cup table – 11 wins compared to Barcelona’s 13 – with their most recent triumph coming in 2020 when they beat city rivals Atletico in the final. Last season they lost to Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, while their most recent clash with Barca in this competition was in 2017-18 when they won 5-1 over a two-legged final.

This will be the second El Clasico of the season; the first ending in a 2-1 Real Madrid win in the Camp Nou back in October. It was their fourth successive victory over their old rivals.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction

With Real Madrid scoring goals for fun right now and with Barca struggling to compete, this one has a Real win written all over it, but it will be no easy ride for Los Blancos. For me, a one-goal victory for Ancelotti’s men is where the value lies.

Picks: Real Madrid to win 2-1 (+700)
