It’s Borussia Dortmund vs FC Copenhagen on Matchday 1 of the new UEFA Champions League season on Tuesday, September 6 at the Westfalenstadion, with a kick-off time of 12:45pm ET.

BVB’s passage to the Champions League group stage was a very straightforward (and direct) one, after coming runners-up to Bayern Munich in last season’s Bundesliga, but for the Danish champions, it needed a win over Trabzonspor of Turkey in the playoff round to earn their place.

We preview Borussia Dortmund vs FC Copenhagen, look at the Champions League odds, and offer some analysis, team news, and picks for this huge Matchday 1 clash.

Caesars have listed over 3.5 goals in plus money at a reasonable +105 but the flip side is under 3.5 goals available at -135. The bookies are therefore clearly favoring a very comfortable home win.

Borussia Dortmund vs FC Copenhagen Prediction

It’s been a tricky summer for BVB as they again look to challenge the mighty Bayern Munich on both the domestic and the European front.

This almost impossible task has not been helped by losing their main man, Erling Haaland, to Manchester City and then another front-line striker, Sebastien Haller, who needs time away from the game after a cancer diagnosis.

But they have made an impressive start to the new campaign in which Marco Reus has stepped up to fill the goalscoring void. The 33-year-old was on the mark at the weekend as they beat Hoffenheim 1-0 at home – a result that has taken them up to joint-top with Freiburg.

BVB Hoping To Improve on 2021-22

Twelve points from 15 represent an excellent start for Edin Terzić’s men, but the tests come thick and fast for BVB though, and following the game against the Danes, they meet RB Leipzig and then Manchester City in consecutive matches.

Last season’s Champions League campaign ended in disappointment with a third-place group stage finish, and then in the Europa League, they were knocked in the round-of-32 by the eventual beaten-finalists, Rangers.

Little Champions League Joy for Copenhagen

Copenhagen had to fight hard to make it to the group stages via the lottery of the playoffs but did it largely thanks to a 2-1 home win in the first leg of their tie with Trabzonspor. Goals from Claesson and Lerager gave them a 2-0 lead before the Turkish team pulled one back late on but a sound defensive effort saw them through the second leg safely after a nervy 0-0 draw.

Despite being winners of their domestic title no less than 14 times, FC Copenhagen haven’t made it to the Champions League group stages since 2016-17, and have only once made it to the knock-out phase – in 2010-11 – when they were beaten 2-0 on aggregate by Chelsea in the last 16.

They appeared in last season’s Europa Conference League but were knocked out by PSV 8-4(!) on aggregate in the round-of-16.

Slow Start for Thorup’s Team

It hasn’t been a flying start to the domestic campaign for Jess Thorup’s team who have won four and lost four, although they did prepare nicely for this game by beating Silkeborg 1-0 at the weekend – Vicktor Claesson again the scorer.

These two have played each other in Europe once before  – way back in 2001-02 –  when they met in the old equivalent of the Europa League, the UEFA Cup. BVB won both legs of that third-round tie before going on to lose to Feyenoord in the final.

Borussia Dortmund vs FC Copenhagen Team Lineups and Injuries

BVB Projected Lineup: Kobel, Meunier, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Wolf, Bellingham, Ozcan, Brandt, Reus, Hazard, Modeste.

Injuries & absences: Bynoe-Gittens, Dahoud, Adeyemi, Guerreiro, Morey, Malen.

FC Copenhagen Projected Lineup: Ryan, Diks, Vavro, Boilesen, Kristiansen, Lerager, Zeca, Falk, Daramy, Cornelius, Claesson.

Injuries & absences: Bardghji, Grabara, Ankersen.

Borussia Dortmund vs FC Copenhagen Pick

BVB are heavy odd-on favorites for a good reason, and it’s going to take something exceptional for the Danish champions to avoid defeat here. They are however experienced European campaigners and won’t roll over and get hammered.

Therefore the value here is predicting the level of BVB victory and I’m expecting plenty of Copenhagen resistance.

Pick: BVB to win 2-0 (+700)
