EPL Pick 1: Brighton vs Crystal Palace

Palace’s 1-0 home win over Newcastle last weekend was their first since Boxing Day and ended a horrible run that had seen them hover too close to the relegation zone for comfort. The win took them to 33 points, only a couple of wins away from safety, and so Roy Hodgson’s men will have trained this week with a renewed spring in their step. The pressure is off… almost.

For Brighton, the threat of relegation is very real. The Seagulls sit just four points above the drop zone, are without a win since December 28 and have picked up a troubling habit of being unable to turn draws into wins. In their favor is the best goal difference in the bottom eight; a factor that may come into play if things get very tight in the final straight.

So, the need here for a home win is huge. In a game known as the M23 derby, the stakes could hardly be higher with Palace fans no doubt desperate to put the squeeze on their bitter rivals. The Eagles will be buoyed by the Newcastle win and with Brighton having almost forgotten how to win, there is real value here in the +260 for a Palace victory.

Pick: Palace to win (+260)

EPL Pick 2: West Ham vs Southampton

West Ham is another team in freefall and their 3-2 defeat at Anfield on Monday night means they head into Matchday 28 as one of the three teams in the relegation zone – Watford and Norwich are the others. The Hammers haven’t won a league game since New Year’s Day, and have lost six of their last eight – a run that has left them in real trouble.

Southampton, after a terrible start to the season that included the now infamous 9-0 home defeat by Leicester, have gone on to have a good season and now have 34 points on the board. They are only a win and a draw away from safety so their work is almost done, but they will want to get those points on the board sooner rather than later.

But West Ham played well against Liverpool and took the Reds to the wire, having led 2-1 until they succumbed to a late rally from the champions-elect. A performance of a similar level would likely be enough to overcome the Saints’ challenge and so there are worse bets here than the home win at +166.

Pick: West Ham to win (+166)

EPL Pick 3: Tottenham vs Wolves

With these teams both in the hunt for the fourth and final Champions League place, there is plenty at stake at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Wolves come into this in fine form having thrashed Espanyol 4-0 in the Europa League and Norwich City 3-0 in the EPL, so their confidence will be sky-high.

A good Spurs’ run was brought to a halt in the last week with two successive defeats – a 1-0  home defeat by RB Leipzig in the UCL and a 2-1 defeat away at Chelsea – but they still remain just four points behind fourth-placed Blues. A Champions League spot is still within Tottenham’s grasp, just as it is for Wolves who are just five points behind the Lilywhites.

So, on the basis that neither team can really afford to lose, the +205 for the draw is well and truly in play. If the game was at Molineux, I’d be jumping on the home win but away from home Wolves don’t carry the same level of threat.

Pick: Tottenham and Wolves to draw (+205)
