After an exciting handful of matches on Thursday that saw Scotland, North Macedonia, Hungary, and Slovakia all book their ticket to Euro 2020, new odds have been released as to who could win it all next summer.

The defending World Cup champions France, who were also runners up in Euro 2016, currently have the best Euro 2021 odds. Belgium and England, who are currently battling it out in the same Nations League group, aren’t far behind Les Bleus in the sportsbooks as possible contenders for the European Championships.

France the Early Favorites

With a boatload of talent throughout their squad, it’s no surprise that France is one of the favorites for Euro 2020. Their core of players is relatively the same as their World Cup roster in 2018 with the additions of several youngsters who could make an impact next summer such as Eduardo Camavinga, Houssem Aouar, and Dayot Upamecano.

However, two of their most prolific strikers in Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe have hit a dismal spell of form this term for PSG and Barcelona. Although the tournament is still numerous months away, it will be crucial that these two start to play better prior because they’re both an important piece of Didier Deschamps’ attack.

Les Bleus have played well in this year’s Nations League, going unbeaten through their first four matches as they prepare to face Portugal on Saturday. Their backline continues to be a noticeable strength, conceding just three goals.

Belgium Cannot Be Taken Lightly

Three Lions Ready to Contend

England will also be feeling confident heading into next summer, especially considering that some of their matches will be played at Wembley. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has burst onto the scene with Everton this season, giving Gareth Southgate another clinical finisher in the final third. Jack Grealish has opened eyes with Villa which in return, has earned him a spot currently in the national team.

That’s just the start for the Three Lions, who also have other youngsters like Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden, who have yet to feature for their country in a major tournament. We can’t forget veteran attackers like Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling as well, who have both proven their worth on the international stage.

This side always seems to choke on the big stage, evident of their collapse in Euro 2016 against Iceland, But, they flipped that narrative on its head in the last World Cup, advancing all the way to the semifinals, where they lost to Croatia in an extra-time thriller. They’re just 2-1-1 in the Nations League and have struggled to score goals, which always tends to be a problem. But with such a wide array of talent to choose from, this should change in time for Euro 2021.

Netherlands and Portugal Are Teams to Keep an Eye On

The Dutch have missed the last two major tournaments, but they’ve returned with a bang, losing in the Nations League Final to Portugal last year. With many stars in their squad who play for big clubs across the continent, led by star defender Virgil van Dijk who should be back in time for Euro 2020 from a knee injury, Netherlands shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Portugal won the inaugural Nations League last year and with this probably being Cristiano Ronaldo’s last European Championship for his country, the defending champions from 2016 will be a team to watch. Many youngsters have made their mark across Europe over the last couple of years, including Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, Diogo Jota, and Bruno Fernandes. With Ronaldo at the forefront, anything is possible from the Portuguese.

Best Bet

A team that I haven’t mentioned who are always a contender are Germany. But, personally, I believe they should have moved on from current manager Joachim Low after their poor showing in the last World Cup. For this reason alone, I don’t see them making it far in the tournament, especially considering they’re in the group of death alongside France and Portugal.

I did believe England were the best bet a few months ago, but things have changed. Belgium is such a strong team from front to back and after a taste of success in the 2018 World Cup, they’ll be licking their chops for more. France will find themselves in the latter stages of Euro 2020, but it’s time for a different country to win a major tournament. The Belgians are currently the best bet to win it all.
