French Defense Dominating

France extended their recent stretch of stingy play with their tournament-opening victory over Germany. The club has now outscored opponents by a wide 10-0 margin during their five-match win streak, and have suffered just one loss in 21 matches in all competitions since dropping a 2-0 decision to Turkey in Euro 2020 qualifying action two years ago. That defeat came last fall, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Finland with many of their regulars seeing limited action.

But while Les Bleus have successfully taken on all comers over the past two years, they will be looking to improve on their middling offensive performance in their victory over Germany. France mustered just a single shot on target in just two total attempts, and took home the points on the strength of a German own goal in the first half hour of action.

Griezmann Leading Attack

The club has no shortage of offensive weapons at their disposal. Superstar Kylian Mbappe is joined by veteran Antoine Griezmann, who has tallied four goals over his past six appearances with the national team. The 30-year-old has also played a huge role in the club’s recent success on the big stage, scoring ten times over his past major tournament appearances, fuelling short -110 odds of him scoring at some point in Saturday’s contest.

Veteran Olivier Giroud has also been a steady contributor. The 34-year-old veteran led the squad with six goals during Euro qualifying, and has potted seven goals in his past nine overall appearances with the national team. However, concerns linger over a fued between Giroud and Mbappe over public comments made by Giroud regarding the club’s game plan.

Hungary in Desperation Mode

Faced with the daunting task of running up the score in their bid to advance out of this year’s group of death, Hungary will be aiming to rediscover the offensive touch that was key to their recent 11-match unbeaten streak. Considering their performance during a lopsided 3-0 loss to Portugal to open their group stage schedule, it will be easier said than done.

The Hungarians struggled to contain a potent Portuguese attack in last weekend’s clash, surrendering seven shots on target to the defending European champions while compiling a meagre 35% possession percentage.

Overall, Hungary has now scored just one total goal in their past three matches across all competitions, and have been outscored by a 7-0 margin over their past two outings at the Euro. Hungary’s National Eleven have also enjoyed no success when facing France over the past half-century, falling to defeat in four straight meetings since eking out a 2-0 win over Les Bleus in Euro qualifying back in 1971.

Who Will Do the Scoring?

In addition to needing a huge outing from goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who enjoyed little help in the club’s tournament opener, Hungary must come up with a way to seize the few opportunities they are likely to get against France.

Scoring first will be crucial to their slim chances of getting past the defending World Cup champions, but given their sterling performance at the this tournament in 2016, don’t be surprised to see the national Eleven keep things close.

The Picks: France -1 (-105); OVER 2.5 (-112)
