Inter and Juventus meet in the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday, January, 12th at San Siro. It’s only the second Derby d’Italia in the Supercoppa, following a meeting in 2005. Beyond the silverware at stake, the rivalry between the two teams adds an extra layer to what should be enthralling match.

The teams drew 1-1 when they met in Serie A earlier this season. Juventus is unbeaten in its last four matches against Inter, including knocking their rivals out of the Coppa Italia last season. While Inter has only beaten Juve once since September 2016, these teams have swapped places in the hierarchy of Italian football over the last couple of seasons with Nerazzurri ending the Old Lady’s run of dominance.

Inter is sitting atop Serie A with just one defeat all season — Simone Inzaghi’s side are odds on favorites to lift the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday.

Inter Milan vs Juventus Team News

Matteo Darmian is fit to return to Inter’s starting line-up after recovering from injury. Having served his suspension, Hakan Calhanoglu will slot into midfield alongside the brilliant duo of Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolo Barella.

Matthijs de Ligt and Juan Cuadrado are both suspended for Juventus, opening the door for Italy internationals Giorgio Chiellini and Luca Pellegrini to start. Juventus suffered a major blow at the weekend despite a thrilling win over Inter with Federico Chiesa suffering a torn ACL. Juve’s most talented attacking player has been ruled out for the season.

There is a lot of pressure on Paulo Dybala. In the midst of lengthy contract negotiations with the club, Dybala is now a crucial player in Chiesa’s absence. The Argentinian has scored just three times since his brace against Zenit on November, 2nd.

Inter Milan vs Juventus Form Guide

Inter became the first team since 1950 to record 100 Serie A goals in a year in 2021. Their attack has been potent even after selling Romelu Lukaku. A run of clean sheets might have come to an end against Lazio last time out, but Inzaghi’s team recorded yet another victory to make it eight in a row in the league.

Juventus will hope its season turned around at the weekend. Max Allegri’s team were 3-1 down with 20 minutes to play away to Roma, and flipped the match on its head to record an improbable 4-3 victory. This was the first time this season Juventus scored four goals in a Serie A match, and only the third occasion they found the net three times.

The Old Lady is unbeaten in eight straight in all competitions. While their defense ranks among the best in the league, with only Napoli and Torino conceding fewer expected goals, they are a mid-table team on offense. Perhaps the Roma game was a break through for their attack, but chance creation won’t be easy against Inzaghi’s Inter juggernaut.

Italy Super Cup Final Prediction

History isn’t on Inter’s side in the Derby d’Italia, but that isn’t something to be too concerned about for this match. Juventus has put together some solid results of late, yet their squad is in a period of transition, while Inter is among the best teams in Europe at the moment.

Just like Antonio Conte last season, Inzaghi has struck the perfect balance between attack and defense. Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko have developed chemistry together up top, and they are ably supported by Calhanoglu and others. Inzaghi has the options on the bench to change the game.

Juve picked Roma apart without Chiesa, but he’s a huge miss in matches like this. His pace makes them a more dangerous team in transition.

Inter is a winning machine right now. This is going to be a tight game, though the league leaders should edge it by a goal or two.

Pick: Inter ML (-137)
