Midweek Hammering by Chelsea

The midweek thrashing in north London will have gone down very badly in Turin but was, in fact, their first defeat in this season’s Champions League. They and Chelsea are already assured of places in the knockout phase and should add some context to the 4-0 defeat. Overall, their form in Europe has been better than their form in Serie A.

Coach Max Allegri will therefore be desperate for his men to translate that good UCL form into some improved domestic performances where, despite their ordinary run,  they sit just four points outside the Champions League places. There is still plenty of scope for them to bridge that gap and the key to that will be winning games against teams above them in the table – like Atalanta.

Signs of a Fightback by the Old Lady

In fairness to Allegri, there have been recent signs of the Old Lady springing to life in Serie A with back-to-back wins that straddled the international break. They ended a three-game run without a win just before it with a vital home win over Fiorentina and followed it up last week with an impressive 2-0 away win in Rome over Lazio, when penalties either side of half-time from acting-skipper Leonardo Bonucci sealed a priceless win.

So there are at least positive signs for Juve and their horrendous start to the campaign – they suffered defeat at the hands of Empoli, Sassuolo and Verona – seems to have been addressed. If Juve can make it three wins on the spin against a team above them in the table, there will be a genuine belief in Turin that they can yet turn this situation around. In their favor, is an outstanding home record against Atalanta, who have failed to win in Rome on their last 24 visits.

Repeat Performance by Atalanta

Atalanta’s third place in 2020-21 was always going to be a hard act to follow but La Dea has proved it was no one-hit-wonder with another good campaign in which they have hovered around the Champions League places. They head to Turn in great shape with five wins from their first six Serie A away games this season and are fourth in the table, just seven points behind the joint-leaders, Napoli and AC Milan.

On that basis, this could be the season that their terrible run of results in the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio ends. Were it not for a run of draws in September and October they would be challenging Napoli and Milan rather than chasing them but it is a considerable achievement for a club previously considered also-rans to be going toe-to-toe with Italy’s elite.

Finally a Win in the Stadio Olimpico?

Their good form has also extended to the Champions League where they still have a chance of making it out of Group F and into the knockout phase via an upcoming winner-takes-all shootout with Villarreal. An away draw at Young Boys in midweek has made that task of qualification a bit trickier than they would have liked, however, and in a game Gian Piero Gasperini’s men should have won, in the end they were thankful to substitute Luis Muriel for rescuing a point with a late free-kick.

Goals have been relatively easy to come by for Atalanta in Serie A – 17 goals in their last six games – so despite their poor record in the Stadio Olimpico, they head there with confidence.

Juventus vs Atalanta Prediction

It is unusual to see Juve in plus money for a home game against the likes of Atalanta but that is the reality for the Old lady this season, and so impressive has Atalanta’s away form been, they have a genuine chance. At +230 there is value here in the away win.

Pick: Atalanta to win (+230)
