Juventus vs Sporting Over/Under and Spread

With the benchmark set at 2.5 goals in the game, the bookies have listed the under at -170 and the over at a more tempting +135, reflective of how close and low-scoring first-leg ties often are.

Juventus vs Sporting Preview

The controversies have come thick and fast for Juve this season, both on and off the field, but the Old Lady is still fighting and could yet end the season with two trophies. In addition to the Europa League, they are still in the Coppa Italia, where they are locked at 1-1 with Inter Milan after the first leg of their controversial semifinal.

Their chances of another Scudetto have long since disappeared though, not just because of Napoli’s brilliance but also because of the 15-point deduction they were hit with due to financial irregularities over some of their transfer dealings.

The Old Lady Fights Back

But even against that unsettling backdrop, Juve has hit a decent run of form with 11 wins in their last 15 games in all competitions – a run that includes winning each of their last three European ties without conceding a goal. While their Champions League campaign didn’t go as planned – five defeats in six – they have responded well after being relegated to this second-tier competition.

The Bianconeri have only played Sporting twice before in European competition, the most recent being in the 2017-18 Champions League where they won 2-1 in Turin before drawing 1-1 in Lisbon.

Sporting Knock Out Arsenal

It’s been an inconsistent season by Sporting Lisbon’s own high standards, but they have still shown themselves to be capable of pulling off stunning results as they did in the last-16 of this tournament when they beat EPL league leaders, Arsenal.

While their chances of retaining their Primeira Liga title have disappeared – they are fourth and 14 points behind leaders Benfica with seven to play – Ruben Amorim’s men would consider themselves more than compensated if they can lift a major European trophy for only the second time.

No Primeira Liga Title for Sporting

Right now, Sporting are having their best spell of the campaign and while they currently are down in fourth in the Primeira Liga, and outside the Champions League places, their 4-3 win over eighth-placed Casa Pia at the weekend has kept them in touch with the top three.

And while they have a miserable record against Italian sides – they have not won in Italy in the last 15 attempts – they have produced some great European results this season which, in addition to a draw at The Emirates, includes a win in Germany against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Juventus vs Sporting Prediction

For all of Juve’s troubles and controversies, this is a team with plenty of talent and European experience. For Sporting, this will be very much a case of not letting the tie get away from them in the first leg, and they may even view a single-goal deficit as a decent outcome.

Therefore, for me, there is value here in the one-goal home win.

Juventus vs Sporting Picks: Juve to win (-115) / Juve to win 1-0 (+370)
